Better results with Sharpmaker than Edge Pro?

I have had my Edge Pro for a few months and have only used it a handful of times. Mostly due to time. I have had a few knives that had some scary sharp edges after using it however I'm having issues. I'm in the middle of sharpening my PM2 and I was not getting results so I switched to my Sharpmaker just for curiosity. After maybe 10-20 swipes on both sides with the UltraFine rods I have a almost perfect sharp edge. So I guess I'm just lost on why a sharpener more that twice the price is not helping me out. I am not too educated on the stone flattening so if that's the case then ill be looking into that. What do you guys think from my description, technique? Stone wearing? Or is there something else I'm not sure about? Thanks a lot in advance guys!

I had a similar situation. I contacted Ben Dale (Edge Pro owner). He was helpful with tips on improving my Edge Pro results. One in particular was to make sure my EP stones were not loaded (which mine were). Also make sure the knife is not moving while sharpening.

Once you get the bugs worked out, you'll love the Edge Pro. It is (IMHO) worth more than double the price of the SM.

My advice: Contact Ben.

Good sharpening,
Dave

I agree with Dave.

A couple of tips for using the Edge Pro:

Get one of the cheap microscopes such as this one; http://www.amazon.com/SE-MW10087L-B...F8&qid=1374119032&sr=8-33&keywords=microscope

You can see much better exactly what you are doing. They actually work pretty good. A little limited, but good enough for seeing where you are removing steel.

Get a 5/16" drill stop collar. jdavis882 has a good video on how to use this. You can easily accommodate the different rates of wear in your stones.

Very strong magnets under the table are great for helping you hold the blade in place.

Watch Ben's videos on youtube. He has a lot of good tips.

Hope this helps,
Allen

From your description of what happened, it sounds like you weren't grinding on the bevel straight with the Edge Pro. You might use the sharpie to ensure you are working the bevel from the apex to the shoulder all at the same time. If your Sharpmaker sharpened it right away, then it was working on the apex of the angle and resulted in a sharp edge point. The sharpie will tell you what you are grinding so you can adjust as needed. Hope this makes sense to you and can help.

Omar

Sounds like the blade wasnt apexedc orrectly. Use the sharpie trick and ignore the degree markings on your ep.

Guys... it's not the tool. It's the technique.
EdgePro, Sharpmaker, DMT Aligner, RazorEdge Clamp, GATCO Clamp, Lansky Clamp, or bench stones.... It doesn't make a difference which you use if your techniques are correct for the tool you're using. An edge is an edge is an edge. A 1000-grit stone is going to give you a 1000-grit edge no matter which device it's mounted in... IF, and ONLY IF... your technique is correct. An EdgePro with a 1000-grit stone is NOT going to give you a better edge than a DMT Aligner. There is no magic in the device. It's only going to allow you more choices of edge bevel angle and a different way to present blade to stone. If your technique isn't correct, you won't get a good edge with that tool no matter what!

My first thought is that the Sharpmaker is set to the same edge angle as your knife, and the Apex is being set to something different.

I'm a devotee of the Edge-Pro as an all around sharpened.

However, it you only need a light touch up of the edge, the SM is faster and easier if the edge is set at 15 or 20 degrees.

I like to set most edges to 15 degrees with the E.P., so they are easily "touched up" with Crock Sticks or an SM.

I have contacted Ben and he is helping me out with some things. I am playing around with some flattening, I was just wondering how everyone here goes about cleaning their stones? I use a scotchbrite pad and some dish soap. Would using a powder cleaning product be more useful? I'm not getting much results with this. Also I have heard that the drill stop collar is pretty much essential, is this true? I'm gonna look at the reccomended JDavis video soon. Also how long or how many sharpenings should I expect out of stock stones before I consider aftermarket ones. I'm interested in the chosera stones I'm just not sure if I should wait a bit and wear these stones out first. I'm sorry that all these questions are new guy like. Thanks guys
