Hey all
In the interest of luncheon and canned meats...

I don't really like spam, but I do like the Armour version... it's smoked... I have visions of the pigs lighting up a doobie, but the smoking makes it much more palatable. Also, Spam canned turkey... shows a lot of promise.

Hi MM. You're right, Turkey Spam tastes way better than the pig stuff. Regular Spam is an efficient food for me because I can't eat more than half a can at a time, I just get that queasy stomach feeling.

Oh and Armour Vienna sausages can taste good only to a starving hiker menacing a campstore. Wouldn't know about their luncheon meat though.

Am I the only person in the world who thinks "mechanically-separated chicken" is hilarious?

Spam regular is my favorite, the flavored ones taste wierd (garlic=nasty), and the turkey has the wrong texture, like firm meat jello.

You guys tried that Tulip (when you cook it, about a gallon of oily puss crap pours out of it) stuff? It's supposed to be givving Spam some competition over here, I don't know anyone that actually eats that.

I don't eat swine so can someone tell me what exactly is SPAM?

Is it just like normal luncheon meat but made with porky pig?

The only canned meat i eat are corned beef. You can fry 'em or you can eat it straight. But i think most of 'em just have too much fat on it. It's kinda disgusting when you do cook it and see all the jelly like fats oozing. It is however my favourite camping food. Beats eating Pot Noodles.

I'm eating a can of Armour Treet right now...

Spam and similar "Luncheon meat" is made with chicken and pork.

I love canned corned beef, but it's too fatty to be eaten by itself. I boil a few potatoes and dice it, and them mix my own corned beef hash. It takes the oil away from the meat and gives the hash a real beef texture unavailable with the premade canned Hash.

It's parts.

If you knew exactly what was in it, you'd never eat it.

Just FYI on the mechanically seperated chicken (yes I find it hilarious too). I was told that they basically take the chicken carcass after the good parts have been removed for other stuff (ie. the meat) and first cook it down till its falling apart, then run it through a grinder, then sift out the chunks and use the resulting paste for filler in things like spam, slim jims, potted meat etc.

yum :barf:

If most people knew what was in most of the foods they eat they wouldn't eat 'em.

;)

Ahhh... Ignorance is bliss... now please pass the chicken buttholes and Pork weewee's please...

According to the can Spam is made of pork with ham, salt, water, potato starch, sugar and sodium nitrate. No chicken parts or other meats, just pure pork.

Vincent: "Bacon tastes good, pork chops taste good"

Jules: "Yeah well sewer rat might taste like punkin' pie but I wouldn't know because I wouldn't eat the filthy motherf**er.."

SPAM is SPiced hAM

Or so they say....

The Truth in Labeling interpretation of this is,

No beaks, just snouts and hooves.

Nope: Ham and pork shoulder only (in regular SPAM). :) No organ meats or other by-products. Low-sodium SPAM has nastier stuff. Go figure.

Actually, Armour used to sell a lot of hams, and of course there were pork "parts" left over so they developed a canned product to use them. At a cocktail party celebrating the launch of the new product they came up with the name SPAM, standing for Shoulder Pork And Ham. Interestingly enough Hawaii consumes more spam than any other state, with Alaska a close second.

SPAM is a Hormel product, not Armour.

Go to http://www.spam.com/ and click on "Spam in Time"

Go to the second entry for the year 1937 titled "SPAM is born!"

And I don't even eat the stuff. :p

When this thread came up i instantly thought of Vincent and Jules and Jules' 'i don't dig on swine' argument...

I just discovered lean corned beef. A whole lot less fat than usual corned beef but may still be a tad too much. Usually when i take it out of the can i chop part of the bottom where most of the fat is. Corned beef hash is great. I like to put lots of black pepper.
