Better stitch groovers?

I never use groovers. In my opinion they weaken the leather. I use an edge creaser, and stitch in the crease.

I use a cuticle cutter from Walmart. $2.85. Also use it as the edger. Cuts shallow.

Those Ranch2Arena tools are really expensive. I use the Osborne groovers, which are endorsed by my leatherworking master/guru/sinsei, Chuck Burrows.

:D

Thanks guys for your input.
BTW I tried to rip apart a practice stitch about 3" long that was grooved prior to stitching. I clamped one side in a vise and grabbed another one with a pair of pliers and pulled apart as hard as I could. I couldn't rip even a single stitch.

I am using a cheap stitch groover from Leather Weaver and can't always get good results.
There are some better and more expensive.

Here is waht I found:
1. C.S. OSBORNE SCRATCH COMPASS $60 http://www.csosborne.com/scompass_1.htm
2. VERSA GROOVER made by DOUGLAS TOOLS sold by www.Hidecrafter.com $100
3. Compass groover by www.ranch2arena.com $ 90
4. Danny Marlin stitch groover from Weaver Leather or http://www.tundraleather.ca/_specialty_tools.htm

Does anyone tried any of those?

Thanks

What specifically is the problem you are having?

I bought a Tandy stitch groover and it was junk. The type that has a threaded shaft and a colar that screws down and clamps the grooving tool bit in place. It always slips and the tool works loose at the wrong moment.

Here is a pic.

Then I found out about this tool

100% better design, there is a set screw in the tip that securely holds the groover bit in place.
It's cheaper too boot!

I didn't buy this one though, It took less time to make one than to drive to the store to buy one.

I had some stainless rod some micarta and some 6-32 cap head socket screws and a 6-32 drill and tap set. It took me all of about 20 minutes to make a new tool. I used the groover bit from the crappy tool
