As well as releasing the Spirit, Vic should also have revamped the SwissTool !

Why don't they include the scissors and belt cutter into the original instead of having to decide from one of their three versions :grumpy:

I reckon they are gonna lose a lot of sales to the new Wave and Charge ....

I'd say, don't judge what you don't understand. Leave it to them, they know better.

sorry bama_lou have to disagree with you ,surely its customer feedback and suggestions that help companies design new products .

hey dunc you beat me to the punch !!

Alright then, I concede. It feels like such an institution like Victorinox should know their mettle. After all, they (IMO, okay?) are the standard to which pocket knife-based tools are measured.

Yup they know their mettle and more importantly, their metals !!

But providing what the customers need/want is the key to (even greater) success .... and right now I need/want a SwissTool with the extra features of the X and RS included in one unit !!

(as well as a LM Charge Ti with the Cutting Hook and Crimper like on the XTi !!)

A concession is not necessary here , there is merit to all points . The diversity of tools appeals to different niche markets . There are some standards differintiating between say key chain type tools or one that fits in a pocket or sheath . Four inches long , one inch wide being something of a standard . Weight is another consideration . One could design a tool to include all features but what would it's size and weight be . I could present links here for bicycle multi tools one of which would be ;

http://www.topeak.com/2004/

These multis will have implements that are desired by a bicyclist .

Wenger has one , I can provide you with many more . Yes ones money tells the manufacturer what you want . Each manufacturer has target goals of how many units that they want - need to sell to stay profitable . Each maker knows best for the customer that they are marketing to .

yup the Alien range kix ass but I stick with Specialized cos they ownz all :)

However... why wouldnt Vic want to market a tool which has more/better features than their previous model - especially in light of greater competition ??

Dunno - if there was a monopoly there would be no consumer choice so no real competition.... the existance of other companies offering better products and services means consumers "suffer" competition rather than "create" it ???

I think the constant drive for innovation is blind alley. Vic doesn't need to constantly come up with new swisstool designs because the ones that exist are extremely well built and designed. Other new designs by other companies add new features every year, but are they really needed? It's a shame that constantly adding gimmicks is seen as a positive thing...

You could call the whole Multi-Tool industry one big gimmick !!

Anyway gimmiks eventually becomes necessaties in the end....

wow perfectionist i bet you didnt think your post would start all this

Well thats what Forums are for - to argue with people !! :D

OK maybe discuss and debate would be better phrasing..... besides this place does seem very quiet compared to other forums I visit so it's all good :)

I didn't say ALL innovation is bad, just the constant pressure to add or change features every year regardless of whether there's any need for it. I don't think that most of what we see in the knife marketplace is actually innovation, that's all...

Maybe they did , if you checked the Victorinox home site at ;

http://www.victorinox.ch/

there seems to be a few changes since the last time I looked , check out this model there # 3.DJ26.N

Another web site at http://www.1sks.com/store/victorinox-swiss-army-multitools.html shows that there are more than 3 versions ,scroll down toward the bottom of thier page here and look at the different model numbers and descriptions .

I don't see why they are even trying to improve it. I think it is perfect the way it is. I've carried my swiss tool for years and swear by it. I got it right after they came out and it has never failed me. It out performs any of the other similar tools on the market hands down that I've ever had, used or seen.

Recently in WV when I was putting up a chain link fence we had to cut out a section of the old fence at my mom's house to move forward. I took out my swiss tool and started cutting the links like I've done many times before. My brother and my brother in law both pulled out their tools too. Both were Gerbers but different one. My brother had the smaller one and he gave up after the second cut with his because it just wasn't working too easily for him. My brother in law had one more akin to mine though and he proceeded until his (brand new minde you) pocket tool broke after about five or six cuts.

I finished the removal with mine and kept going and ended up using it for more link removals later on too. The swiss tool is the best of the best period. No reason to improve what is already perfect in my opinion.

Nothing is perfect !! Not even Jenna Jameson :)

Victorinox is fairly new to the multi tool game and the SwissTool/X/RS is still pretty much their first attempt (pretty damn good attempt!) - so I'm looking forward to their next version.... with .... better steel, one handed blade opening, leveraged pliers etc etc etc .......
