Better than a rat 1?

People often ask what's the best folder under $50 and more often than not the rat takes the majority of votes. I recommend it myself. I got my fiance a rat2 years ago and it is a great knife. While browsing LAPoliceGear recently I see that they have a knife, the TBFK ( the best ******* knife). S35vn steel, black g10 handles. 3 3/8"long blade, 8"overall. Best part. $40! Anyone ever try one out? Looks like a pretty decent deal. Just curious if it could knock the rat out of the #1 spot for best knife under $50. I know they offer the rat in D2 now so maybe it still takes it but a $40 knife with s35vn and G10 seems pretty good. Plus it has a great blade shape.

Your post piqued my interest enough to look at a video on this knife. Honestly, even if the blade is S35VN, the build of the knife doesn't instill confidence in me. The liner lock looks incredibly thin, pocket clip seems weak, and handles look too smooth.

I like their operator pants. Own a couple pairs. Have held up well. Just ordered 3 more actually. Just saw the knife and was intrigued. I wouldn't buy it as I own many many spydercos and zt's. Just wondered if it could be a better option than the rat 1 for those that ask for that best budget option.

Rat1 is great but I often think of the Kershaw Link for under $50 myself...and American made

But the cool thing about the Rat1 is it could be in the sub $30 category where it really gets hairy

Better is a relative term and it depends on what you like.
For some people the buck 110, an opinel , or some form of sak are the best you can get for under 50$. I don't know what the best knife under 50$ is, I just know of knives that I have chosen in the price range.

Here are some insights with this knife. S35VN (At least behaves like it in use/sharpening so far), 3D-Machined G10 scales, and decent liner lock. I have seen 5 of them so far, and 4 of the 5 were excellent. 1 had some back and forth play in the detent before opening the knife, so it went back. The blade is relatively thin, so it cuts pretty well. Not super thick behind the edge either. However, as the RAT 1 is now available in D2, the choice is that much harder... These knives have served their purpose well for me at least (beater knife that I can sharpen less frequently and I won't cry if it gets broke / lost).

My vote for best under $50 is the Spyderco Tenacious.

I tend to go for folders under $100. The Tenacious is my recent EDC and so far am really impressed with it...
Opens and closes smooth , locks solid with no play , thinner in the pocket than the R1 , pointy tip comes in handy also. Still dig the R1 , but so far the Tenacious reminded me why I've always liked Spydercos.
Got a good deal on the Tenacious and am glad I went with it.

Just read the link you posted Jay, like I need another knife....but I think I'll pick one up in the near future just for the hell of it.

First do a Google search for LA Police Gear reviews

Wonder about the heat treatment on the knife Jay linked too. At first I thought he was a shill. I don't see any data in his thread. $35-50 isn't too bad a price, being that it's made in China at about 18 cents to the US dollar... Is it really s35vn?

Small Buck Vantage Pro, S30V, G10 material handle, Buck Lifetime warranty, Sub $50. The large is $55 fwiw.

I got a resilience when they first came out. Still like it although it has spot rusted on me once, admittedly through semi neglect. I grabbed a couple of pocket bushmen in bd-1 for next to nothing. It's big but feels fine in my xl hand. Recently picked up a hold out 2, some pocket bushmen, and a rat 1 in d-2. I keep picking up the Bushman

Tip down only on a flipper? Nope, not better than a rat 1.

Edit: Just saw the original post date... Wtf filtrum? Did you really just dig up an 8 month old thread to bash the vantage knives when they weren't even what the op was discussing?

I only see one problem, the AUS 8 RAT I is a $20 knife. I can get two RAT I in AUS 8 at Sams club online site for $32 shipped to my door, they are at worst $25 on Amazon everyday as well. So a better knife for twice the price, who would have thunk it? Now if you are referring to a RAT I in D2, I'd say they probably are still pretty evenly matched.
