Bevel to convex edge

After seeing a few vids on convex blades, I thought it might be interesting to take an old beater knife and change it over to a convex edge. Is this easy to do by hand or will it take too long?

Thanks,
Jay

If you're only talking about the edge, it is pretty quick as long as you dont reduce the bevel angle much. Doing the whole grind will take some time. I did rebevel my Schrade peanut to a full convex grind by using an 80 grit belt looped over a vice and stretched out by hand. It took about a week working a few minutes a night. I doubt I'd try that with anything bigger.

To completely convert a standard edge to convex takes me around 2-4 hours on sandpaper. This includes finishing and stropping.

If I'm sloppy about it more like 1 hour.

Changing a knife to a convex bevel can be easy or very hard depending on the knife. I suggest before you try and change any knives you buy something like a bark river to get a better understanding of what a proper convex looks like and the true performance values it brings. If you still want to give it a go try on a blade that you don't care if you mess up.

^ Yea, if you know why you want a convex then by all means go for it. But make sure you DO try it first with a cheap knife. Ease of doing it is really dependent on you, some people struggle with some things while others excel. Personally for me, convex is the way to go. good luck
