This is my first thread, hi to all and thanks for looking, I am trying to figure out how to bevel my edges of bolsters and scale where it meets the knife. Instead of rounding or having a step, I would like to have a nice dove tail all the way around so the transition looks cleaner. I'm not sure how to do this and make it look clean and uniform. I have simple tools and would like simple methods if possible. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

I've done it two ways. One, eyeball it on the regular belt grinder. Two, use a work rest set up at a 45 degree angle, either on a disk or a belt.

Simple tools way,but a real PITA.
Cut your bolster stock to length, flatten both sides.Piece of 1/4" glass and sandpaper will work.
Put the flattened sides together, mark both ends w/45* angle starting from the center where the two pieces meet on each bolster.Connect the lines on the flat of the bolster.
Then take a file and remove the marked sections. You should have them come to a point in the middle.
Attach to the knife and then you can fit your scales to the bolster with a file.
This is very intense hand work but will work.

I answered the question for beveling the front edge of the handle at the ricasso. I think Stan's talking about dovetailing where the scale and bolster come together. What tools do you have, and what are you trying to accomplish?

I have belt sanders disk sanders files grinders and a drimmel, I am talking about the front edge of the bolster but continue that all the way round. I plan to leave 1/8" of metal exposed all the way around and want to bevel the scale and bolster for the transition. I'm afraid to do it free hand and have it look uneven.
