Maybe I missed something over the last few years. My earlier Khuks seem to have more narrow blade bevels with a convex edge. My newer models seem to have considerably wider bevels with a "flat" grind. Was there a change? Does it matter other then seeming to lighten the blades?

Don't know --- all mine have a convex--- Maybe I should look real close at all of them, I could be mistaken but don't think so.

Gents, I haven't been getting Khuks long enough to know about the thin bevels but, I have read about the convex edges. Most of the once that I have gotten had flat bevels and I have a 15" Sirupati that you would have to say was concave like the hollow ground knives. Not as bad as most though.
That is why I don't worry about the angles in sharpening much. Trying to get the convex started.
The flat and hollow edges comes from the shop having an electric grinder now. The only blades that I have bought that seem to have just a slight convex edge are the last two knives made by Kumar. :) Oh yea, My 15" AK by Bura seems to be a bit convex too.

yeah, I hhave flat, convex, and concave grind HI khuks. The profiles seem to match the khuks well though, so no complaints.

to add my two cents, all my Sher's have the modified convex/flat edge. Not entirely convex, but not flat.

often this is called the Sabre grind. I use it because I find it resilient and easier to touch up & maintain than convex grind.

The old timers can comment on this better.

But...if I understand Yvsa's posts correctly, at some point Bir Gorkha introduced new grinding equipment and the kamis switched to the flat and/or concave grind. Not everyone is happy about this.

As munk and others mentioned, some kamis (i.e. Sher and Kumar)seem to have retained some convex character with their edges.

It is? You know,Ferrous, I don't know knives. I wish like hell you'd spit this stuff out sooner so I could learn faster. !!!

Feel free to enlighten me about steel anytime.

- The Sabre Grind
The sabre grind is a strong edge format. The bevel starts around the middle of the blade, and proceeds flatly towards the edge. This leaves a strong edge for chopping and other hard use. But it also means the edge will be fairly thick, so this design will not necessarily slice all that well.
The sabre grind is found on many military classic designs such as the Randall #1 and the kabar.

With an acute flat grind, like on HI products, you can add another bevel at the edge that is less acute than the original grind (of course). THis will still result in a shaving sharp edge that can stand up to abuse like a convex grind. You can change a sabre grined into a convex grind by removing the material in the bevel transition area, that is, rounding the area where the bevels meet.
