I'm not sure how often this happens but I got stuck with one (not this one). The adze is chopped off and the pulaski becomes a single bit axe. I found this recent eBay listing:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/TRUE-TEMPER...%2Fxzy5Eqsugui7sdKDio%3D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc

You can tell by the narrow shape (double bit like) of the eye and the lack of much of a poll.

Good catch. Thanks for the heads up.

FWIW - such an axe might still be a good and useful tool if you thought of it like a boy's axe.

True enough. Might be difficult to fit a single bit axe handle in this type of eye. Guess you could always use a pulaski / db handle.

Upthecreek over on B&B has one if those. There's a thread about it.
He was trying to figure out what it was.

Heh--it's funny. Even though I had read the thread title as I was scrolling down that image my mind totally expected the mattock blade to still be on it and I did a double take when it wasn't there. :D

I suppose my big question would why the heck would anyone do that? Must have been a huge pain to chop off the mattock blade and file it down.

A cutoff wheel would make quick work of it. Then grind/polish with a flap disc and you're done in 5 minutes.
