This morning I received a "Second Chance" offer on a Vanson "Terminator" Jacket I had bid on a few weeks ago.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8353296515&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEDW:IT&rd=1

Something smelled and I forwarded the "Offer" to spoof@ebay.com.

I was right. It was a spoof, but DAMN it was real looking.

I REALLY WISH I COULD SHOW THE GRAPHICS! SO REAL LOOKING!

The bottom line is that if a message "from eBay" does not show up in your "Messages" chances are it is a fake.

Here is a copy of the "invoice" sent me. eBay says this is a fake also.

Neighbor kid (nicest kid in the world) bid on a orchestra-quality tuba ( of all things!) and, although the tuba went for much more than his top bid, he ALMOST fell for the second-chance bid offer, much like yours.

He called the mean, cynical, flinty-eyed neighbor on the hill before sending anything.

It was a scam. 'Bout broke his heart. He SO wanted it to be true.

I marvel at the effort thieves go to. I'm just too dammed lazy to go through all that.

Stick-ups, that's the ticket.

Thanks for the warning Bill.

They haven't sent me one of these yet. Probably because I'm only bidding $10 and it costs them $15 to write up the scam.

You could pay Philip a visit while wearing your new jacket.

You might want to edit out your contact information if you don't want it turning up on Google searches, etc.

eBay get scarier by the month. I don't play there as much as I used to do. It seems like the wild wild west, but without enough marshalls to take down the riff-raff. Interestingly, I did win a second chance bid on a pair of Vanson gloves a few years ago. Worked out fine and I have been very happy...but that was several years ago.

I get tons of phishing emails supposedly from ebay all the time.

I do to, several from ebay, paypal and various banks everyday. But I got one today that darn near fooled me. It was similar to the one that Bill got, a message from an ebay member. They were asking why I had bid on an auction and hadn't paid for it. They mentioned negative feedback if I didn't respond. I've won several small auctions lately and wondered if I had made a mistake. I mean this thing looked absolutely real. So I clicked on the link to the auction and up popped an ebay login screen. Screech!!! My mind finally clunked in gear and I didn't type anything. Noticed the URL and it wasn't Ebay. Dayum. That one just about got me, and I'm about the most suspicious and cautious computer user out there. I do the security for our network for goodness sake. The bastids almost got me this time.
