Anyone else noticing this?

I type my search words in either the advanced search, quick search or search this thread box, click go and................nothing  .

All the settings seem to be in order and my searches are not to complex. I even tried the word search "knife"................nothing  .

Sometimes the searches work, but most often not. About 90% of the time it's a no go.

Help :(

Searching for "knife" and other common terms will overload the search function. If the searches are working some of the time, maybe you need to pick more specific search terms.

Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along. :D

JR said it. All I can add is if you really want to search Bladeforums for "knife" you can do it if you go to Google Advanced Search and put us in the domain field -- but you'll get many thousands of hits....

Actually, I used the "Knife" search after trying my specific search term. I figured maybe my specific search was to much so I tried "Knife" as a simplified term.

Sometimes I don't know whether to laugh or cry.... One more time: tell us what you were searching for and what happened and we'll do what we can to investigate.

Oooooooookay  .

I've tried searching in all available search areas (advanced search, quick search or "search this thread" box), with sporadic results. Sometimes I get results, other times I get nothing. By nothing I mean the page doesn't even change. Zip. Notta'.

As far as what I was searching for, I can't even remember. I really doesn't matter and I only used the 'knife' search to see if I could get any results as I was getting none from the previous searches with various words and terms.

While I was writing this, I was running a couple test searches. Earlier today I ran the search for "cold steel" with no response. Now tonight it works.

FWIW - This is not my first cannoe trip. I am not some forum newbie who doesn't understand the workings or limitations of web forums.

Thanks for any help anyone can offer.
Nats

* Just tried searching "cold steel" again. No joy. Didn't work

ATTENTION NEWBIE: Apparrently this is your first canoe trip. The bladeforums search engine will not turn up results with KNIFE in it because there would be millions of results.

BE MORE SPECIFIC for what you were searching for. Pay more attention to what people who are trying to help you are posting.

Just to throw in I think you need to be much more specific. "cold steel" will likely NOT be specific enough. Gunsite might work gunsite folder will probably not work.

SPyderco won't work, maybe Lum chinese would work.

Note the quote, "my searches are not to complex". This implies multiple searches using various search terms/words

Note the quote, "I even tried the word search "knife" ". Now pay particular attention to the word "even". This means that after all the searches I performed, I then tried "knife". If you scroll back up the page you will notice that two other posters have mentioned that the search term "knife" will probably not work. Then if you look real close at my reply, you'll see that I wrote...

I have been specific in my search word/terms. As stated in a previous post, a search term that worked one day, didn't work the next. No big deal but I thought by starting this thread that I would find out if anyone else was having this problem and to bring it to the attention of the Mods and Admin.

This is why I am here. To pay attention. To learn. To have the knowledge of those "in the know" at my fingertips. I did not come here to troll or stirr up the s**t. I asked what I thought was a simple, innocent question and found my self almost berated buy those who missunderstood my questions and replies.

This is without a doubt the longest post I have ever made in any web forum and it troubles me that it has to be in such a negative manner. I look forward to spending time here, as I renew my interest in knives, with a positive outlook.

Thanks
Nats

Nats, I think the reason the Mods are frustrated is that you haven't given anyone a clue as to what, specifically, you're searching for, with the exception of "knife" and "cold steel." I know you've said you don't really remember, but knowing what you're searching for will help everyone determine if you're specific enough. As a general rule, common terms like "grind," "knife," "blade," "steel," "EDC," etc will not yield results. Nor will the names of popular, widely-discussed manufacturers like Spyderco, Busse, or Cold Steel. I usually can't tell before I search if my search terms are too broad, but if I get an error message I know I have to choose more specific terms.

Spark is the owner and administrator of BFC and mouthing off to him is not a good thing. You don't have to "clear things up" for him.

All I can say is trust me, I am being specific enough ;), but as I had said before, Search terms I was getting results for one day were yeilding no results the next. i.e the cold steel search.

Ah ha! This might be a clue to the problem. So far I have seen no error messages. Will there always be an error message if there is an unsuccessful search?

Thanks for your reply JR ;)

I realized who he was but I felt this needed "clearing up" as I felt I was replied to harshly. I do apologize for the tone of my post, but in my defence, at the time I felt such a reply was in order. I apologize not because he is the owner/administrator but because I now feel it is warrented. Are you the type of person who would bend over and take it just because of who someone "is"? I am not. If Spark feels so inclined to give me the boot because of my posts, then so be it. But I feel that when looked at in it's full context, my post are not too far out of line.

Searching with unspecific terms on my machine always results in an IE "Cannot find server or DNS Error" message. When I use more specific terms the search is successful.

e.g. if I search for "Benchmade Skirmish" I get the error message; search again for "Skirmish" and I get 15 pages of results.

Jeremy

Think of the serach as doing a logical OR, so any unspecific search term will negate any specific terms in the same search.

For me non specific terms just say "done" and I get no results, like you. ( I don't use IE)
