BG-42 Heat treat

Leonardo,
It is not heat treated like ATS 34.
Austenizing temperatures are higher, so are soak times. The info posted on Admirals site is from Latrobe's recommendations. Soaktimes are for 1" pieces, knife blades 1/4" do not have to be soaked as long. Also note, that they use a salt bath furnace, in a atmospheric furnace soak times are considerable longer.
I know a number of makers that have warping problems with BG 42, when doing there own heat treating in a atmospheric furnace. I use a salth bath for heat treating and have not experienced any of this. From my own experiences tempering temperatures do not need to be at 950 F, 400 F is fine. The lower tempering temp increases corrosion resistance and ductility. I have done test by flexing the tip of some blades and for a RC 62 they flexed good 40 degrees. One would expect to break the tip at this RC level.

Have a look at one of my BG 42 blades comming out of a saltbath at http://members.home.net/thknives/Heattreat.htm

After all, take care when ginding and choose a good proffesional heat treater for your BG 42.

Regards,

Thomas
