I went to this site that i just searched up on google for a comparison chart of steel blades, just for curiosity, and I found this site.

From this guy's ratings, BG-42 has overall the best characteristics. How come no knives I've commonly seen are available in BG-42? I've heard it mentioned, but how come it isn't very common, like in BMs or spydercos? Is it really expensive or something?

thanks

I wouldn't rate that chart as very accurate. For example I would rate D2 higher in edge holding and toughness relative to the other steels (which are all stainless). BG42 has largely been supplanted by a new steel that is supposed to be a bit tougher, S30V. None of these steels is as tough (resistant to breaking) as many of the non-stainless steels. I like BG42 a lot, but I haven't done any real head-to-head tests against S30V.

When Chris Reeve began making Sebenzas, he used ATS-34, then he switched to BG-42. All my Sebenzas are from the BG-42 era :) Now he makes them of S30V, which he helped develop.

When you get up in that range of steel, there is decreasing difference in general use performance -- they're all very good. They are all very hard to work, also. Don't let a BG-42 Sebenza get too dull or you will be a long time resharpening it. :)
