BG-42 Military Jr. experimental batch

I also volunter for being a test subject for a BG-42 military junior.

even if i have to return the knife after it is done i would still love to play with a BG-42 blade.

I'll sign up in a New York second!! I've had a small Sebenza with the BG-42 blade since Feb.98 and it is really sweet.Very easy to get scary sharp and it stays that way.

How many companies manufacture BG-42? I know that Latrobe Steel/The Timken Company manufactures BG-42. But Timken has put Latrobe up for sale. Hope the new owners will still make the stuff.

It could be that the average knife buyer does not buy Spyderco. Maybe those that do know the difference. Probably the dealers would best know this.

Hey, ceg, how 'bout a "Spyderco should buy Latrobe campaign?"

Carl Jacobsen - I like the idea. Latrobe Steel a subsidiary of Spyderco. Or better yet Spyderco Steel a subsidiary of Spyderco.

Hmmmm . . . . A steel mill owned by "knife people" that can do custom runs of purpose-concocted cutlery steel? Anybody for an Initial Public Offering?

Would be a good idea having a knife maunfactorer owning a steel mill. I doubt though that the company that recently purchased them would be ready to part with Latrobe just yet.

Are there any specific qualifications to volunteer to try one out?

As a fan of BG-42, and the owner of a small Sebenza and BG-42 Rinaldi TKK, I'll give it a shot. It would be interesting to see how the edge geometry and heat treat compare to the other BG-42 blades I have.

Ooooohh, me me me !!!
I just ordered a Military in CPM440V, and I think a smaller version in BG42 is an excellent idea, especially if a new lock design could be implemented as well. I'd love to have the opportunity to play with one of those!

It's a test for both the design and the steel. I'm sure if the design proves to be effective, we'll make the model in 440V as well.

R & D can only make small runs for tests, or it becomes part of the sales dept SKUs. The Sales dept needs planning time for a new SKU, so R & D comes up with these schemes to learn.

We have enough steel to make several hundred pieces. I'm sure some of them will be sold as well. They just won't be part of Spyderco's "line-up" until until they can be planned in.

Latrobe is 12 times bigger than Spyderco. We did speak with them and there should be no problem in obtaining steel from them, even with new owners.

Sal,

Let us know when they are available...I hate the waiting.

BTW, you mentioned elsewhere that you had been testing the BG-42 in a Q-fog(?) machine for resistance to oxidation. Any results?
