BG-42 not good for 186 Ti

I sent my 186 XLTI in for a BG-42. It came back in eight days which impressed me very much. I wonder if it will take another eight days to get the wooble out of the blade. The blade has plenty of side to side wobble and up and down wobble with poor lock up. Oh and has a nice rattle if you shake the knife.

The BG-42 blade has a bronze bushing which has an inner diameter way to large for the screw that is supposed hold it to the handle. The hole in the blade is to large for the original stainless bushing for the 186. So there must be a third correct bushing for this application which they did not bother to use.

Do you have to ask them to inspect the work that they do or is there an additional fee?

Well it's back from it's second trip to Buck. It has one improvement. The blade does not flex backwards when cutting. The same bronze bushing is still there so the blade screw cannot be tightened to much or the blade will not move. The bronze bushing which is pressed into the BG-42 needs to be thicker than the blade. It is obvious at this point that Buck does not have the correct bushing to hook up a BG-42 to a 186. I have tightened the screw just enough so the blade does not get pinched and added lock tite to the threads. The lock tite has to cure for 24 hours so I will no more tomorrow. This knife will no longer be carried for daily use. I don't think the bronze bushing will last long rubbing against the threads of the blade screw. The original blade bushing is stainless steel. I would think the bronze bushing would be best used on a 560 or 110.

I guess not enough 186's get sent in for blade swaps to warrant stocking the correct part.

I think a call/email to Leroy is in order...It's obvious that there is no one left familiar with the 186 and its peculiarities... :(

deep6 thats sure a bummer
i was looking forward to having damascus put in mine but i guess i will wait a bit longer and see how things shake out , i have a brother thats a machinist so i just might get the blade sent and have him put it in

speaking of dreaming,
i had a vision of a 560 with a droppoint blade init the other nite in a dream...
some how trax was saying could not be done as they were all gone?
i dont know maybe to much pain med...

If my memory serves me correct (it has been known to falter at times),, I communicated with Joe Houser by phone or email, about putting a BG-42 blade in my 186. It seems to me that he highly discouraged it for the reasons expressed above. It makes me wonder if this was handled through someone not as familiar with this knife?

I had them do the BG-42 upgrade on a 560 and that turned out perfect.

Yeah BM10, just wrote that as I read here somewhere that Buck will not ship blades or other major components.
But I've been wrong before.

oh i never seen that , not to surprising i guess that will be another job for our midnight run :D
i still havent heard if they are going to give me the custom buffalo with damascus , i think i will send another email tomorrow

I contacted Joe before I sent the knife for the upgrade and before sending it back for adjustment. I sure wish he would have shared the above info with me! I also have a 560 with a BG-42 which worked well!

i dont see why sending the blade would be a problem
i can see them not recomending changing in a 110 yourself but a 186 shouldnt be to difficult

Sounds like you need another chat with Joe... I believe he will do you right, but I understand your frustration.

I wish you guys would quit dreaming about me... :grumpy: (I dream about the girls on CNN/HN...Christi Paul; ah, there's a beauty...)... :D

The 560 is not the same as the 186; not even close. They just happen to look similar. Another Forum member here was interested in swapping blades in a 560. The 560 has a recessed pivot rivet which is peened rather than pressed. Tough to get out; tough to get a new one in and peened. If you have special tooling, it is probably not too difficult to swap to a BG-42 or other 110 blade, but at this time, it is beyond my capabilities. Not because I couldn't manage to get it done, but because it would not be profitable to spend the time making the tools to do the job, then possibly ruining the first one perfecting the technique. You can't learn if you don't make mistakes, and any mistake on a 560 will be expensive.

I suspect Leroy has the necessary tools & experience to do the blade swap on a 560.

For the 186, it will likely be necessary to make a special bushing. If you have the 186, look at the backspring bushing. It should be exactly what you want for the blade bushing. The 186 actually tightens the liners against those two bushings and the spacer. They are not supposed to rotate. The blade and backspring do the rotating. The opposite of the 110.

Now, if y'all want to dream about something...dream about a 120 with S30V blade; black linen Micarta grip extended about a half inch with extra spacers (aluminum and Micarta), and more pronounced fingergrooves... :p

I'd go for that with a 110 and 112 companion set:D. Preston

i would think that the bushings would be a real scearce item now and have to be spechel ordered or the shop did not know were to get any...
did'nt you post some picts of your jig set up on removeing and installing baldes once a long time ago...
could you email me some picts of it? :)

:grumpy: I totally understand why you are upset but I am taking care of this right? Didn't you get my email? Why bad mouth me here?
If you still have issues, send me another email and lets work them out.
I will still bend over backwards to make you satisfied regardless but geeze!
