BG-42 or S30v Sebenza Classic Small

Both steels are good but if I had the same choice I would go with the s30v version. I had an s30v large regular Sebbie and I loved it, I have also owned a couple other knives with s30v blades and it is a great steel.

Dangler,

BG-42 will take a better polish and IMO is easier to sharpen. S30V will hold an edge quite a bit longer and may be a bit tougher. On paper s30v is the better steel but unless you plan some extreme tests I doubt you would notice much difference. S30V is designed for cutlery and BG-42 is designed to be a high temp bearing steel. If you are good at sharpening s30v is definately the better steel IMHO.

I've got a Large Plain in BG42 and a Small Classic in S30v. I touch up the Large once in a while and 3-4 times a year sit down and do a real heart to heart sharpening. With the Small Classic when it gets dullish, it needs to be resharpened.
Both knives do the same chores, so its an even test.
I'd like to retro fit with ATS34, but thats only a dream.

Flip a coin. You won't go wrong either way. My personal preference though, is BG42.

Like Danbo said, you can't go wrong either way. Unlike Danbo, my personal preference is S30V.

The steels are pretty comparable with both having strengths and weaknesses. Without using them side by side in the same knife it's probably nearly impossible to tell them apart. So if you want to know which steel is best for you buy both Sebenzas and figure out which you prefer.
