Had a chance to gut and bone 4 deer this last weekend. Did 2 with my Custom shop 110 with BG-42 blade and 2 with the Cabelas S30V that my girlfriend bought for me. Both knives were razor sharp to begin with.
After I was done, the BG-42 was still sharp, but the S30V was scarry sharp. Anybody else think that the S30V is supperior?

Don't know for sure. I've read some reports of S30V being more brittle and prone to chipping, but that is simply second hand news, and I have no evidence to substantiate it. I have both a BG-42 custom and a Cabela's S30V, and both have performed well up till now.

You might ask your question over at the Chris Reeve forum. CRK went through a change from BG-42 to S30V in most of its knives, including the Sebenzas.

Lots of folks over there seem to prefer the older BG-42 knives. Others like the newer S30V just fine. Sounds like six one way, half a dozen the other.

Ain't that the truth! LOL

I dont know either I cant bring myself to use any of them other than the ATS-34
and 420HC, 425 and 440... :D

I have made a few posts talking about using my AG S30V last season. Didn't have a BG42 to compare it to, but it was far superior to my other 110's as far as holding an edge longer.

I have really tested my 110ag since i got mine its seen some heavy duty gutting/skinning/deboning jobs, and now i have to finally touch it up as its still sharp, but not how i like my knives. The bg-42 is not much diffrent as far as i can tell, they both work equally well.

I'm with you Ratty:D . I used my AG S30v this year and I'm sold on it  . I was sad to hear Buck was out of BG42 as I was going to send in one of my tin can 110's for an upgrade.....well maybe it will get an S30V DP ;) .

I have made and used both S30v & BG42, CPM 3V is far & above both of them. Just my point of view, does require a little more care since it only has about 7% chrome.

I have watched with fascination the "rebirth" of bg42, but can't help but notice how everypne left it behind for the likes of s30v and vg-10, etc.

Personally, I just love my gin-1 and ats34, and I also like 154cm. I am certainly no expert, but seems when makers leave a certain steel behind for another, its because they perceive an improvement.

It sure makes us buy more knives, doesn't it!

I will wait to post that I want a new 110FG BG-42 when our Buck Brother's trade/buy/sell sticky gets up and running.

Can anyone tell me if any of these nice steels are available for upgrading a plain old user 110?

P.S. Buckaholic--I'm glad you found yet another new avatar to remind me that steel type discussions are esoteric and almost irrelevant when compared to a discussion of, say, brunettes versus blondes.

Thanks TIZWIN...

Glad I could help.
I think this is Pebbles all grown up ;)

Oh, to keep this thread related...
Borrowed the below from the Buck web site for 110 Custom ordering.
Don't see S30V there.
Contact them for accurate pricing and upgrade capabilities...
Your Mileage May Vary.

ATS-34, Satin Finish + $15
BG-42, Satin Finish + $19 (heard that they are out of stock)
420HC, Bead Blasted + $4
420HC, Black Oxide + $8
420HC, Mirror Polish + $12
420HC, Satin Finish + $0

I know you can order a custom 110 with nice steel, but how about the 1980's era "user" I'm wearing on my belt right now?

Can I send it in to Buck for an upgrade?

From what I have seen on one of mine, and heard others comment on. I think I would send in as new a knife as I could for an upgrade. Just seems to be differences in old style frames and blades and new style. Loose blade syndrome?

I can't comment on edge holding, as I am unable to use my knives for very long without sharpening them. It's either an emotional issue or a character flaw, but I'm trying to kick it!

Given that, I will say that I am able to get a sharper edge on my Cabela's AG 110 with the CPM S30V blade than I can on my 110 with the BG-42 upgrade. Both now have virtually identical edge geometries, but I just get a better edge in terms of "scary sharp," popping hairs, etc. on the S30V blade.

Now, I can make the BG-42 blade pop hairs, but just not quite as well.

Of course, one may have a better heat treatment of the specific blades I have. One may respond better to a different type of sharpening tools. I used diamond-impregnated tools, finishing off with a DMT rod that is almost worn out followed by one that is so cose to being worn out that it's essentially a steel. It works well on both, but just a little better on the S30V.

You could get out the file and make that "NIB" AG a finger groove S30V.:D

I could send it to Coonskin Cap McGyer to FG it :)
But it's not a BG-42
It's beautiful as it is on my belt. Thanks again Triple E.

Thanks Rhino...that's good to know...so maybe I'm not missing out by not having a BG-42 EDC(?)
