I read some website once which described BG42 tempering and the color that would appear after drawing at various temperatures. I can't find it. My BG42 Buck 110 shows a reddish color in the nail nick (which the polishing process often misses), and I am wondering what temperature that was associated with. Or is this bunk?

Yes and no. Tempering does bring on different colors and it is fairly well known which colors you can associate with with certain temperatures. Having said that, you aren't going to be able to accurately gauge the temper temperature of any blade from the color found in the nail nick. Too small, too odd of a space to 'read' a temper temperature.
