I am hoping to gain some insight regarding bg42 steel and fixed blades. First, it does not seem that many production companies use this steel for fixed blades (six inches), why is that? Do you guys know of anyone who does use bg42 for fixed blades? Does bg42 work well for fixed blades? I am thinking about making a 6 inch blade out of bg42 and I am just collecting data and opinions. Thanks for all your input.

I hope its good. I bought 12 feet of it. Wayne Goddard likes it. It has been around for years because Bob Loveless offers it as an improved performance steel over his ats-34.

Im going to have Paul Bos heat-treat mine. I know it will work then. If you want me to send yours in with mine just holler. It will save you alot if you are just doing one or two.

I've been using it for about a year on my fixed blade knives and the reports I'm getting from the field is that it works very well.

I don't know if you have any experience with ATS-34, but BG-42 does eat up a few more belts. I also think BG-42 finishes better without the spotty "hazing" you can sometimes get with ATS-34.

i started using it a few months ago and i and my customers are very happy with it. i agree with tom that it finishes better than ats-34 and i find better edge retention.

I use it as well and Love it. Infact I prefer it above all other steels. Wayne Goddard, Bob Loveless, Strider knives, Greg Lightfoot all use BG 42 atleast some of the time. I use ats 34 and 154 cm too but mostly BG42. A good strong and sharp steel with excellent edge retention as well it's pretty stain resistant. Chris Reeve use it on their folders and I personally think they make the sharpest folders made (not that that means much as it largely depends on you grind) but the edge holds well on their knives too. Take care.....RDT

Stainless--grrrrrrrrrrr
Sorry guys but I had to do that.
