Mr. Bos--

Can you tell me if BG42 steel requires special heat/cryo treatment to optimize performance, as compared with say ATS-34 or other similar stainless steels? If so, does this make it harder to get consistently good results with BG42? What, in your mind, is the optimal Rc hardness for a BG42 hunter/utility knife in the 4-5" blade length range, 1/8" thick blade stock?

Thank you--Will York

Pardon me, but why don't you email him? I emailed and telephoned him for the first time today, and he is a hell of a nice guy.

Will: you should stay as close as possible to the procedure as you can to get the opteman on this materal, and that includes the Cryo. Most of my customers that use this steel for hunters and utility knives ask for a R/C- 59-61. Paul.

Paul--

Thank you very much for your reply. I'm ordering a knife from a custom maker who uses your services, and was trying to decide what steel to use--should have made that clear up front. I see now that it may have looked like I was trying to get some hints on heat treating to use myself--I'm not a maker.

A better question probably would have been to ask if you could share your own opinion on what steel, at what Rc, you would choose if making up a knife like I described, for yourself.

Thanks again--Will York

Will: there is no secrets to heat treating, I dont mind helping other knife makers that do there own heat treating, some day I might buy a knife from them , Id like to know its heat treated right. Most of the materials that are used for knives today are all good steels if they are heat treated propley. glad I could help. Paul.

Paul--

Very tactfully stated. I can understand your not wanting to step on any toes by chosing just one steel over the many other good ones available. Thanks again for your responses.

Geez Will, isn’t it possible that Mr. Bos is just being straightforward? Sometimes reading between the lines is like reading between the staircase steps – there’s nothing there.

Glen--

I wasn't agitating--I respect Mr. Bos and thanked him for his reply. I doubt he's thin skinned enough to take offense at my response. I was only responding with how it seemed to me. It IS a little hard to imagine that, as a user of knives himself, he wouldn't have a preference, given his expertise. If I misinterpreted his reply I'm sure he can tell me himself, with no hard feelings. I certainly have none, and meant no offense. I was only acknowledging that he has legitimate reasons for leaving public recommendations to the makers whose names are on the blades.

Will: I own many knives, Although I dont do any hunting or fishing any more, about the only thing I use a knife for anymore is opening packages from my customers, cutting radeater hoses and scrapping gaskets.I have used knives out of all the popular steels and find they all work well. I do have one knife that the late Jerry Politas made for me out of O-1 tool steel that is R/C-59 that works real good, I!ve cut up quite a few animals with it and can actually even sharpen it myself. Im not to good at all at sharpening, Im lucky im in with Buck Knives they do all my sharpening.Paul.
