BG42 vs. S30V

I know this has been discussed before but it is bothering me.

I have been reading through the posts and I came across a few that said they see chips on their S30V blade. I bought on Monday the large Sebbie with the solar wind design. The gentlemen was so nice to go in the back and give me one born on 10/29/02 with the S30V blade. I thought that was great. Now I am not sure if it is? I love the knife, it is AWESOME, better than I ever expected. But will I have a problem with the blade holding up? I am only going to use it around the office, cut papers, fruit, boxes, normal stuff. But now I am not sure if I should have doubts about S30V. People are saying their BG-42 sharpens easier and doesn't show chips. Should I try to get a BG-42 instead? Can someone enlighten me and make me feel better? I am not trying to start a argument, just curious.

Howard:
It is very unlikely that you will have any problems with the S30V. I've had mine for a couple months and have been nothing less than pleased with its performance. For your uses the S30V should serve you well. I think that the people bringing up the chipping issues are suspect due to their apparent reluctance to send the knives back to CRK. If you ever have a issue with ANY part of ANY knife that you buy from CRK, Chris will personally deal with it until you are satisfied. Just ask the infamous Lenny.:D  :p ;)

Yeh, wasnt there one who was "cutting a 3 inch sapling" and complained of chipping? I've got the BG42 and it does fine. There is supposed to be a slight ease of sharpening with the S30V.
guy
edited to add: Howard, buy both! LOL

I chopped some 3" saplings with my Strider AR in S30V. No chips.

BTW, rumor has it that S30V is harder to sharpen than BG42. I can't comment because I don't have anything in BG42...yet.

I am more than happy with my Bg-42 Sebenzas. S30V seems to be all the rage right now but only time will tell; BG-42 is time proven. I do notice that the Rc was not run up as high on the S30V and wonder if this has anything to do with the steel's characteristics at higher Rc hardness.

I know that if Chris does something, he does it right. CRK will not put a knife into service that will reflect poorly on his stellar reputation. Moreover, if there were to be any problems with a CR knife, it is common knowlege that he will make good on it.

Scott Dog - I am not sure what you mean by:

"I think that the people bringing up the chipping issues are suspect due to their apparent reluctance to send the knives back to CRK"

I brought up, what I considered to be, a genuine concern with my Sebenza.

I have not gone back and looked at the posts but I think both of the people mentioning chips (me being one) were both from the UK.

I only have 1 small Sebenza and sending my EDC across to the States is not something to consider lightly on cost, time, and the likely hood of me never seeing it again becasue of the vagaries of internationl posting.

I emailed and spoke to Anne @ CRK and we have resolved the issue. I have no problems with their customer service as I have just had another issue resolved very quickly and efficently.

i also had chips on s30v after a light test, after grinding them out with a lansky and talkin to frank at framar i have kept the knife to see if it happens again,if it does it will go back.
i will tell you what is suspect, the fact that a lot knife user's in the uk have this forum to learn about new knives and when they buy them and,for whatever reson, have a gripe/question they get this attitude thing.remember what we have heard about a knife/steel we have heard here,if a knife do'sent perform as we have read that it should we are going to ask here first.lighten up.
go with the s30v mine hase been great after the initial teething probs and crk has a great rep for custemer service.
cheers

"I emailed and spoke to Anne @ CRK and we have resolved the issue."

So, what was the resolution?

Lynn - It was a sort of a resolution ie if it happens again I will ship it over to to CRK for them to look at.

In my email to CRK I went into detail about what I had used the knife for eg cutting brambles in the front hedge and it was sugested that it might have been grit on the plants or the fence post I was cutting agaist that caused the chips????

I have almost polished them out with a couple of sharpenings and the next one will get rid of them I am sure.

I still use my knife every day and have not had any more chips.

Bagman, cutting weeds that are more than my weedwacker can handle is something I spend time doing myself. Many of us do it. I generally use a fixed blade(not necessarily tactical size) because the edge is thicker and less likely to be damaged when I cut and hit fence post ,chain link fence ,etc. I love my Sebenza, but there are some jobs that will go to other knives.
take care
guy

Harvey, thanks for sharing that.

"I have almost polished them out with a couple of sharpenings and the next one will get rid of them I am sure."

I have a feeling the problem will not return after that next sharpening. We're all, maker & users alike, learning about S30V...

Perhaps all my other blades have got chips in but I dont spend loads of time gazing at them under ideal lighting conditions so perhaps I just dont notice :D
