Bg42?

There shouldn't be. Do you have a card that says BG42 for the knife you describe?

I asked a similar question last week. I bought a Small Sebenza with a BG42 birth card. I was told the BG42 was never labeled on the blade.

Thanks for your help gentleman, and yes the birthcard did say bg42.

Possibly rebladed at sometime. If the original BG-42 blade was damaged or broken, I believe CRK would replace the blade with s30V and not BG-42. The knife would still have the original birth card. If this happened you should have been told.

That could be the exactly the answer, and if the seller knew the blade was not the original BG-42 blade, yes, that should very definitely have been disclosed.

If that is the case, then it appears the original BG42 blade was replaced with an S30V blade (the "S" mark). This can happen intentionally or due to a warranty issue. CR knives have lifetime warranties, but they always replace older parts with current materials as a practice.

Any of the following could be a possibility:

- Out of spec lock up (warranty)
- Thumbstud replacement cracked the original blade (warranty)
- Irreparable damage done during a blade refurbishment (warranty)
- The birthcard was swapped either intentionally or accidentally
- The previous owner changed the blades intentionally (part swapping is not unheard of )
- Near the blade steel changeover date in early 2002, CRK made a stamping mistake at the factory (doubtful but as often pointed out, everyone's human) - BTW - what's the date on the card?

Any of these issues (except perhaps the last) should have been noted by the seller before you bought the knife. I'd backtrace the knife previous ownership with a few direct questions myself.

I think it's fair to say that the seller might have been completely unaware of the blade issue. :) For example, s/he could have purchased the knife from the prior owner without having been told about the change of blades, and if s/he either never disassembled the knife or didn't realize what the 'S' meant, s/he wouldn't have know that there was anything to disclose to the OP. It's probably a mystery that will stay a mystery.
