BHK Edge retention?

Just curious about the edge retention on the BHK's knives in their band saw steel. I've been thinking about one of their patch knives and a bushcrafter, but the low hardness kinda worries me as all my carbon steel knives currently are in the 57-60 hrc range. While it may be true that people have been using knives like that for ages I can't justify spending that much on their knives if I can get much better performance out of others at the same price.

As you yourself noted, their knives are made from old saw blades. These blades have been used to saw millions of board feet of lumber. I doubt that you will ever put their knives through enough to wear one out, and their lower hardness just makes them easier to hand sharpen. If you want something more than that, then you will need to buy something much more expensive than BHK's very inexpensive prices.

I have one. I give it a touch up about once every couple weeks with medium use. I have the small Tiger Knapp and keep it in my portable Bob that I have with me every day. It's too small to use hard but I use it for daily chores where the small blade works. I'd put the retention in the AUS 8 area. Sharpening is a snap.

Yeah but they also have those saw blades with 90degree edges..... and a gerber freeman in s30v is the same price.

Reeek: thats the kind of feedback i'm looking for!

Thanks to both of you for your input, I was just worried that they'd hold their edge no better than soft 420j knives (even if they're easy to sharpen they lose their edge in a single use...), I think I'll get them after all!

BHK has its own subforum at the "other forum". There are plenty of happy users of BHK knives who will share their positive experiences.

The owner of BHK, L.T. is a good guy and very easy to get in touch with if you have any questions or problems.

BTW, I own 3 myself and have no complaints.
