One of the interesting facts about Bhutan from the link I posted was that 85% of the people are subsistance farmers, or do some other traditional craft. It seems that while they may be "poor" in the western sense, they are able to feed themselves. People like this should be able to weather any depression or other economic problem as they rely on themselves and their families and village mates.
The Bhutanese Government should be as sensitive to protecting the traditional way of life of it's people as it is it's forests and wildlife.
The change to a new and faster paced society should be done slowly, over time, so as not to cause much of a disruption as often happens in other 3rd world countries.
