I've been working on a knife with parts composed of damascus steel and copper soldered together to form a sheath collar and knife handle butt cap. These pieces are all polished and ready to etch, but I'm a bit puzzled on how to protect the copper from the ferric chloride.

Here's the quazi-WIP thread: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/854563-Not-as-easy-as-it-looks!!

Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Peter

You can use a stop out such as nail polish to protect the parts you do not want to be etched. Use a colored nail polish so it is easy to see where it is. Check to see that there have been no failures in the layer of polish every few mins.
