BIG AMS sharp edges

Just received my BIG AMS. I love it and the finish is great, perfect for those who don't like coated Busse knives but didn't want to spring for the full fancy satin.

My question is has anyone smoothed out the sharp edges or are planning to? I feel like the front talon hole bump could slice me in hard use. I'm thinking of taking some fine grit sandpaper to it to round it off. Thoughts?

As you like, but you'll be at it awhile. On my WorkSharp, the fine-grit belt doesn't really do anything to INFI, and that's at probably 400 rpm. It doesn't hold heat like other steels, either, I notice.

Is your belt worn, perhaps? INFI doesn't seem especially hard to grind. Curious about your comment re holding heat. What do you mean?

I have a pack of belts and have used them on Busse kin in various states of wear. When I reprofiled the edge on my RS, for example, the steel absorbed and dispersed enough heat that it could quickly be felt on the spine, through the coating. Maybe it's because of the coating acting as an Insulator; I dropped Thermodynamics and don't know. Anyway, the INFI is noticeably cooler after the same amount of friction from a belt in the same or very similar condition. It is satin, for what it's worth.

This much I know. WorkSharp recommends 1/2 second of exposure to the belt each pass per inch of blade. On the fine grit, you'll be there all day if you buy that.

INFI can be brought to a pretty high temp without messing up the heat treat.

I've sanded INFI and it didn't seem to take an excessive amount of work.

Update- I was able to smooth out the sharp edges in about 5 minutes with 320 grit wet/dry sandpaper. I'm going to throw her into the knife block and run her through the kitchen for a few months.

Well, my God. I thought we were talking about FINE sandpaper. If you used 320, I take back everything I said.

I have a 600 grit belt for my grinder that I use for finish edges.

Removing enough steel to reprofile an edge with that would drive me even more nuts than I already am! :p

320 at first seems really aggressive, but its so much easier to remove steel with it, especially a fresh belt.
