Sunnyd made a nice comment about my avatar in a different thread and I didn't want to hijack my own thread, so I thought I'd share a larger shot of it here. Caught this double with a buddy the week of Thanksgiving and the knife in the shot is a new Trout knife a local maker put together for me.

Great work on that blade if you ask me. I'm a sucker for a nice bird and trout pattern fixed blade. Great size for general use. Posted a close up of the knife and my signature pic as well. That fish in the signature is too pretty to appreciate in such a small pic. A nose over 22 inches on the 4wt Winston fly rod in the avatar pic:eek:! Caught by my buddy and not me unfortunately:(!!

Hey Sunnyd give me a shout if you ever make it to Memphis. A short drive west into central Arkansas puts us on the Little Red River in about three hours. The Little Red is a tail water off Greers Ferry Dam, so we catch 'em like that almost 12 months out of the year!

Nice catch! I like the BT too. They are one of my favorite patterns and fly fishing is my passion. Too bad it was only about 10 degrees here today.:(

April can't come too soon for me.

Nice catch on both the fish and the knife!

Is it catch and release there or can you put something in a nice old cast iron pan?

Thanks. As far as your question goes it depends on where you are. There are some catch and release areas, but plenty of other areas where you can keep your fish. I'm a big catch and release fan, but I will keep a few rainbows for dinner if I'm in the mood. I release all of the browns though since they are wild fish. The rainbows are stocked yearly, so I don't feel as bad keeping those and I actually like the way they taste more than the browns. If you end up making your way across the states on your 2 week adventure make sure you come through Arkansas, so we can catch some of these trout. I'll bring the tackle if you do:D:D! Just imagine it... nice big campfire with a couple of fresh caught trout rolled up in aluminum foil with lemon and butter roasting on the coals:thumbup:. That would be a good tale to pass down, not to mention a nice lay over at the half way point home. Big trout down here, the world record brown was caught on these waters and he busted 40 pounds!

Also you pondering the adventure got me to thinking about a good friend of mine's dad. We call him Daddy Rube. He has always given us stories of his adventures. Most recently(about 3-4 years ago) he and a friend (well into their 60's) bought a sport fishing boat, had it hauled up to Minnesota and dropped it off. Over the course of about 2 months they rode that thing all the way down the Mississippi river to New Orleans and eventually the boat sank down there. They talked about that trip for years and one day just got up and did it. He had his diary published and bound and titled it "The River Rat" shoot me a PM and give me your address I'd love to send you my copy. It's real thin and an absolutely awesome read. You would appreciate the adventure!

Love the images...beautiful fish, thanks for sharing.

I highly recommend it but don't let it get too complicated. All the fancy casting and huge variety of flys are a choice. I keep it simple and have great success. Start by drifting nymphs under the surface and move to dry flies later as you get seasoned.

Well now, its nearly 4:46 am and I am cruising through thread after thread to make sure I didn't miss anything here in the the last few days,, and low & behold, I did almost miss it.. But, not quite

Great knife and WONDERFUL pictures of some fabulous wild fishes. You just made me start licking my chops when you spoke of the campfire and trout supper. Thanks for the invite flyfishrman, you never know, I may just take you up on that one.. What makes it more enticing is you and I think alike conservation wise, as I couldn't agree more about the rainbow vs brownies comment you made regarding C&R!.

OK, but for now, I am just going to lean back and stare at these photo's and reminisce..............:)

Like the knife and the trout....

I'm all for catch and release (I release all wild fish), but a fellow can keep a few stockers.

Bring it on sunnyd. Since you're enjoying here are a couple more. The biggest brown I've ever caught with spinning gear on top and with the fly rod below. 24 inches square on the top and just over 21 below. Most proud of the one on the fly though since I caught it on a sow bug that I tied:D.
