I'm looking for a place to buy a couple of QUALITY Axes. Anyone know of a good seller of excellent axes? The ones I've seen at the hardware store look like junk. Are they worth buying? The steel heads on those look like they won't hold an edge.

I need some large axes, not any small ones or hatchets. I know there's plenty of good knifemakers making hatchets, but what about big axes? Big as in lumberjack size, but not double headed.

I'd appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.

Hi Running Wolf,
If you like a real nice axe go and take a look at the site from Gransfors in Sweden. They make very good axes the site even is available in English.

Go visit: http://www.gransfors.com

If I remember right the Gransfors axes can also be bought in the USA do a search on axes on Bladeforums.
Cheers, Bagheera

Lee Valley Tools (www.leevalley.com) in Canada has a good selection of axes including Granfors and Iltis. I have an Iltis double-bit and also a 3/4 single bit with a 3.5 lb. head... a bit heavy but a fantastic chopper. I have used both to field dress big game, in addition to normal chopping and splitting chores. Iltis axes are made in the former West Germany, and ring like a bell when you tap the head. Lee Valley mail orders and with the Canadian peso at 65 cents US you might find a bargain.

Hi Alberta Ed,

"Former West Germany" you're kidding you got your bearing wrong you probably mean the former East Germany !
By the way I looked at the Lee Valley website but couldn't find an axe.

I just posted a reply about a full sized ax in the general discussion group, a Vaughn 'Sub-Zero' that I just picked up. I haven't had the chance to stone the edge and chop anything with it yet, but it's the nicest looking one that I've seen in awhile and Vaughn seems to do ok with their other tools.

Thanks, Bagheera... I meant the Iltis axes are made in what used to be West Germany and is now Germany-Germany (I think...) Lee Valley is great about sending out their catalogue; if you can't get one let me know and I'll mail you the ax pages from the current catalogue. What with the horrendous storms we read about recently, a good ax might come in handy for clearing the avenues in Paris, etc. Did your area get the strong winds? Alas, we in Alberta are enduring the warmest winter in a century, with temperatures as high as 20 C. in southern parts of the province. However, winter has never failed us yet.
