In recognition of those over there who show respect of tradition's true meaning above and beyond the call. And for Yvsa's appreciation of course.

Edit: If you count every feather on that bird and figure one guy working to put, and support, and keep the bird in the air over there, you might get pretty close to why this is a "Flagship" in the truest meaning of the word.

Great pics Rusty, thanks for posting them. What we're looking at here is a former Soviet MI 24 Hind helicopter, being operated by some gentlemen who wouldn't appreciate me talking about them. Reasons for the elaborate paint job, in descending order; patriotism, scares hell out of the bad guys, keeps the good guys from shooting at "unidentified aircraft".

I'm stunned and delighted with that bird. Moved. I want to see all military hardware so addressed.

The term "awesome" was badly over-used in the 1980s. What you see here is an appropriate occasion to use that word.

This is a perfect example of the "Pride of Ownership" that the military works so hard to instill into its members.

I've seen pictures of Hinds before. In regular paint, I'd probably have noticed. But in that getup, I didn't give anything but the eagle another glance.

trust the yanks to make such an obvious target of themselves,it works both ways you know, yep the friendlys know who is in that copter, but so do all the unfriendlys AN IT STICKS OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB, bet this one gets shot down before long. silly buggers.:) :)

AN IT STICKS OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB

I guess if it's in Afganistan, and it flys, then it's a bullseye.

Besides, the Hind used to be one of world's most heavily armored helicopters. It would be a good choice to use as a provacative piece of bait in support of a squadron of medium bombers.

YEP I GUESS THERES THAT TO IT
but you would want to be pretty high up flyin it as those afgans have plenty of rockets. shoulder launch kind.
i must admit i love it copied all pics to my favourites:)

I think the paint would be good camo in many surroundings. What's with this, "trust the yanks to..." stuff, Ghorka? I don't say: "trust the Aussies to knock a good paint job."

KICK ASS!!!:D

I'd imagine that mottled-brown-feather look would actually blend nicely with Afghan terrain. Besides doesn't ANY plane silhouette against the sky, making it a possible target?

The downside of plinking away at birds like this one is they are likely to turn and run you into the ground in a hail of depleted uranium and fire:eek:

YEAH BABY!!! Firepower!!

hey munk
i mean just that the aussies couldant afford to do a paint job like that, but on the serious side i do fear for there safety ridin around in that helo, it makes one easy target to identify. rather them than me.:) an as for the plinkin, thats ok with aks, but what if they decide to use a few of there favourites the good old shoulder rocket.
oooouch:)

Bumped into a special forces guy who's seen this aircraft recently, not a scratch on it. When this particular eagle soars, the smarter vermin seek their holes. A "shoulder fired rocket" launched at it would be answered by nothing short of a hellstorm from the sky.
Does the unique paint job make it a clearly identifiable target? You bet it does. Does the fact that it operates with impunity, unchallenged and unscathed, demoralize the bad guys? You bet it does.

i sure hope your right sarge time will tell.
next time you see em though tell em to stay very high up where they wont get hurt.its a bit hard to shoot back a hail of fire when your on the ground in a smokin heap. think of the press for the afgans if they shoot it down. morale goes two ways.:(

Amen to that, Sarge. In 1944 it was said that you could walk across the Sea of Japan on the tops of American periscopes.

In reality there were just two or three boats doing their jobs like nobody had ever done before or since. Demoralizing the bad guys.

And IIRC, it's still the worlds' fastest helicopter. :D I love that Americans are using this. An Mi-24 painted like this is just classic, especially with recent international politics. Like Raghorn said, "awesome". :D

It might be best to get one of the later versions, though, that had exhaust coolers for the engines, among other things.
