Hi

I'm currently using a CS Kukri machete.
Great, but I'm ready for something a whole lot better.

Chopping small firewood, yard work, showing off to friends, you get the picture.

I'm looking at the Ontario knives.
looks great, I lean towards the combat blades, but I'll readily admit that this is because of the tacticool factor.
If you think that that's wrong, gently steer me back to the utility blades.
It looked to me like the combat blades (slight recurve) could do everything the utility blades can, plus slash at burglars.

So, recommendations welcome.

BK9, Junglas, HI Khukuri. Lots of good options. Nothing like a khuk for showing off to friends though (insert safety warning here). They got that cool factor that comes from lopping the heads off of zombies.

 on the HI Khuk. I've got 2 different models from them and both are beasts and would do well in in the areas the OP described.

HI= Himalayan Imports. Or try a 8" Stromeng. Those are great!

You're better off with the right tool for the job: an axe. A knife can do all those things, but not nearly as long.

A BK9 or Junglas sounds about right. Condor makes plenty of knives/ machetes that would work too. The Speed Bowie is awesome. There's absolutely nothing wrong with wanting a big, manly knife.

They must be based in the US, then?

I read that shipmenmts from the Khukri House (Nepal) take months.

Wow. Just looked at the Condor stuff.

Love the look of their machetes.

HI knives are handmade in Nepal. Auntie Yangdu (the one who sells them) is in the US and gets them in from Nepal. She often has most models in stock but when if they arn't you can order one but it could take some time. If you really are really interested, check around the HI sub-forum in the link above. Plenty of great information there and like I said, keep an eye out for their Deal of the Day. I got both my khuks for less than $100 each s&h included.

If you google himalayan imports, you can take a look at their webstore. But deal of the day is the way to go. Just gotta be FAST. Check in the afternoon. Most of the good stuff sells within minutes. Hard to go wrong with a handmade custom for under $100.

What brand is HI?
I can't find this brand on knifcenter.com

Hi mendelb!,

We have no dealers and we do not sell on that auction site.
We only sell thru our own website and store and in our forum here at bladeforums in the manufacturers section.
Feel free to stop by to check us out and make some friends!

An axe for "yardwork"? You, my amigo, are more skilled than I;) And must have one helluva yard!

Got both of those for less than 150 shipped to my door in 3 days. Himalayan Imports is the way to go!

Are the handles big enough for western hands?

I have a Kukri, but I don't use it as the handle is tiny.

My Kukri is very old though, Asians have been getting bigger too, since improving their diet.
