Hi all! Haven't been able to get onine more than once this past week since my computer's been in the shop. I've been getting on someone else's computer when I get the chance to try and keep up with messages. I apologize to those of you that I haven't been keeping current with on messaging :o. I should be back in business by Friday though . I'm on a friend's computer right now :p.

The 2 fires out here are friggin HUGE!!! I went shooting skeet with my cousin out in the Desert a little past where you turn off to head out to Julian yesterday and probably moved through a couple hundred shells :p. Destroyed a washing machine that was out there with some deer slugs before heading back to San Diego.

The wind was nuts on the way back home! RV's, Semi's and other high profile vehicles were told not to even drive on the I8 at that time. The wind was probably gusting at about 70mph with shrubs, weeds, and plastic road reflectors bent completely sideways while my baby (03 SI) was getting pelted with sand and small rocks :p. It was getting dark and as I was nearing the turnoff to head up to Julian when I saw the fire out there....the hills were lit with a orange glow and I could see the flames in the vague distance. This is a HUGE fire. It's already crazier than the firestorms. There's some HUGE evacuations going on throughout the county and major highways are now closed. It's scary to think of how fast that fire had to be moving with the wind conditions the way they were. There was less than 5% humidity yesterday and the winds are supposed to be worse today and tomorrow. All the fuels outside are dry and conducive to firespread. This is going to be a huge one!

When I saw the fire yesterday, it was right before Ramona was evacuated. The enviornment around the fire looked stable with the smoke hanging low on the ground and not really going anywhere, but now that I look at it today, it's creating it's own wind/weather. Looks like a bigger firestorm this time!

I'd highly suggest keeping up with it on the news, it's not everyday you see something like this. Amazing!

See you guys when I can!

-Paul

Glad to hear from you Paul. Sounds like it's getting crazy out there! I'd like to see some pics if you get a chance to snap a few.

-Dan

I'll try and snap some if I come anywhere near the fire again. If not, I'll try and get some good pictures of the smoke and the ash if it starts snowing ash like it did last time. I think the main USPS processing facillity is already closed as it's close to the fire in north county and the houses in the area have been evacuated....too bad I work at the one by the bay :p.

I'll try and get some good shots for when I can get back online at the end of the week!

Sounds good.

Say, didn't they make a movie about something like this? :D

I rode through Julian on a 600 mile ride about five years ago, before that last big fire. Great little town. I wouldn't recognize any of it now:grumpy:

Stay away from the fireline, boy!

You know...with all that back-hair...you could go up like a match!!

Take no chances ...

Paul, great news!!! As I said in my email, if you need a "safe" place to keep your infi.....

Just saw some video of the fire...yikes! Stay safe out there, Paul, and aware.

Your first INFI is still safe here in Ohio :)

Thanks for all the kind thoughts fellas, I think my INFI will be safe though :D. I've got it all in the car. Along with my gun just in case. I may be evacuated....probably not because of danger from the fire rather than smoke and ash. Air quality is crappy right now and tomorrow when the winds change it's going to get incredibly worse!!!

We were having some beers looking at the fire one mountain over (with a hill in between) most of the night last night. It's amazingly HUGE!!!! I'll give you guys an update later on whenever I can get on again. I took some vids with my phone last night, unfortunately my camera was nowhere to be found :p

TONY: The fire missed Julian...:D lucky because of the wind direction!!! You should have something cool on it's way too :D. Too bad I can't get any mail right now

Paul,

Maybe it would be best to just get out of there.

I'd offer you a bed ... but my place is a little far away!

Be careful and stay safe. :o

As a side note: I teach in East Los Angeles. Today, due to the air quality, a student was rushed into my room during lunch as he was having an asthma attack. For reasons unknown to me, his mother did not give the school his medication. (They better look into this). Pretty scarry for the poor guy.

Be safe bro! I hear that it is insane down there. Seen pictures, listen to the stories, even know some that have been evacuated...but it's nothing compare to the poor folks who have been moved out of their homes or have had them destroyed. My prayers go out to those in need.

My friend's 30 acres in Jamul along with his shed filled with desert toys and guns, work truck/project truck/commuter car, and house all burnt to the ground yesterday morning. I know a couple people who've had similiar misfortune, so far my family has been lucky, but I've had a full house because I've been pretty much as close as you could get to the fire without any actual danger. Air quality isn't as bad as you can think in most places of the county, it's been pretty crappy by me, and bad by my work (right at the bay) as well. I've been hacking up some gunk from working on the docks exposed to the ash floating around. Probably not the best thing for me, but I can't wear those paper masks for more than a couple minutes. Funny because I don't have a problem with the SCBA's when I'm going to my fire classes/training :p.

Looks like it'll be another week or so before everything's wrapped up, but most of the big fire danger's have already burned in my local...so the fire is now elsewhere. The FD's and PD's done a hell of a job with evacuations and controlling spot fires and such. One of my Roommates is an EMT...he told me of how they got a 100 box covoy together to evacuate hospitals and even the elderly patients that were filling the warehouse sized rooms at the del mar fair. He's been on for the past 5 days with only 10 hours in between shifts to pass out.

I don't know what the current count is, but the other day the evac # was 250,000....that's 200,000 more than the Cedar fire. I'm sure it's been more than that by now, but I've been shooting pool for almost 24 hours :p just got a sweet stick and a tanker of a breaker!! :D

Stay low Paul. . . . Heat rises. . .that's all I know!!!. . . Seriously. . .that's ALL that I know!!!. . .

Glad to hear that you're safe. . . .

Damn, I've been following this story online and on other forums and its scary stuff...

Got me to thinking about what I would do if I had 20 minutes to take what I could carry and get out. Tough decisions about what I would grab.

The steel would have to come with, naturally, but what about CDs, books, clothes, etc?

Clothes can be replaced I guess, but CDs and books are another story.

Very very hard to lose everything like that in one fell swoop.

It's funny, the more I learn about fire in my fire science classes the more comfortable I am with it. I respect fire and what it's capable of rather than fear it. It's a very unfortunate situation.

The fire wouldn't be as bad as it is or might not have been possible if for the last 100 years or so we'd been putting out any wildfires as quickly as possible when in reality, fire is part of natures course. It keeps the growth down. Because of this brush, scrub brush, bushes and shrubs have grown incredibly dense and in times of drought and low humidity become as tinder....except it's tinder that covers the whole of SoCal!!

I just checked up on it and the winds that I thought were about 70MPH were actually 84MPH as clocked by the Highway Patrol  when you've got hot/dry winds traveling that fast with 5% humidity and very little rain fall for the last year you've definitely got the potential for disaster!

I took that into account and got a bunch of sentimental stuff/pictures/binder of cd's/knives/some clothes/water into my car JIC. I can live without everything else. I just music/memories/knives is good enough :p

I'm glad to hear you are safeish. Thanks for keeping us posted, and come on up to the Great Nor'Wet to take a breather when you can.
