Here's a youtube vid of a Bulgarian knife maker, He has a belt grinder with what looks like at least a 20 inch contact wheel. http://youtu.be/Og5GL5PGo_U Do any american grinder makers make a contact wheel that big? I have a Coote with a 10" and I think you can now get a 12" I like doing hollow grinds but on a 10" wheel the tallest you can do is about 1.10" I think a 1.5" tall hollow would really look cool

Totally cool! Forget the platen and just go for the big wheel. To my knowledge, no American grinder has a wheel that big, at least in the retail sector.

Nathan the Machinist has platens that simulate a large wheel. I want to say 36" and a larger one. He just posted in the knife makers supply for sale section and makes quality stuff.

Beaumont Metal Works sells a 14 inch contact wheel that makes a very tall slight hollow grind. It can be walked up the blade to the spine and looks like a flat grind at first glance. Larry

I've got a 14" wheel and I believe they say it will do a hollow grind on steel
1 1/4" wide. I've done grinds on steel wider than that and just walked up
the grind.
