Going under the knife this afternoon for a total hip replacement. Of course, I'd rather not have to do it but I can't wait to get back on the road to recovery. I should be back to 100% by spring, assuming all goes well.

I thought about asking the Doc for the bone to give to my Neo, but my wife didn't think that was a good idea.

Good move, it beats increasing problems. I got a new hip in 2012. I could not believe how easy and painfree it was, from surgery, through physical therapy. Basically one month later I was back to normal. Just follow the routine, take it slow at first, do what the doctors and therapists recommend.

Shann, you will do fine. Make sure you follow all the directions for what and what NOT to do. I've had both of mine done. Second quicker recovery than the first. Do all your exercises they ask of you. Keep trying to lose weight.... every little bit helps.

Advice I learned the hard way:
Be nice to the nurses... especially the grumpy ones.
BRING FOAM EAR PLUGS FOR THE HOSPITAL.
Ask for the "bed extender" if you are anywhere near taller than 5'9"
Don't eat chili in the first week you are home.... (you may or may not be able to wipe your own ass, and your wife will NOT appreciate Chili poop. Ask mine.)
Do not watch daytime TV in your recovery. It will rot your brain. Ditto cooking shows.... they make you hungry.

Let us know how things are going....

I got home Wednesday night. Quite a lot of pain but doctor said it went "perfect". Started walking short distance every couple hours an have started in home PT. My wonderful wife is taking great care of me. She rented a lift recliner and it's really saving my life.

My Neo is having some issues. Didn't understand why Daddy screamed when she tried to climb in my lap.

Excellent.

Hmmmmm, I was never in any post-op pain after either of my surgeries. Where did they make the incision, over the side of your buttocks, or in the front? I realize that everyone's pain tolerances differ, as does their response to the various pain meds. I did just fine with ibuprofen, and could not tolerate any kind of narcotics.

I guess I must have a low pain tolerance. I am still taking a couple pain pills each day.

Thank goodness your surgery went okay. My brother in law has had many bone replacements of one form or another. Most went pretty well. But he has to be careful twisting his body and other things that most consider normal. Hopefully the pain will decrease soon. Not good to stay on those meds too long. My wife takes meds every day. I know she is addicted. But what choice do I have? What choice does she have when you really get down to it?

That's terrible. I feel for you. I've been on oxy for 10 days and my stomach is messed up. I hope she can find proper relief. Sometimes there aren't good alternatives.

One Month Post Operation.

Had my first visit with my Ortho today. He said everything on the x-rays looks good. Just need to keep working on my PT and walking. The pain is nothing to worry about, just muscle aches and pains, etc. associated with starting to move again.

Basically, I am sore, and walk with a cane, but can do everything by myself except putting on my socks!

I am still a little nervous around my Neo when she starts racing around, but then again, when a half blind 90 lb dog is playing and running at you its nerve wracking, hip or no hip.
