I FINALLY got a Credit Card!!! (Yes I'm 'only' 18)
Any opinions on what purchase I should christen my new card with?

Haha I'll "only spend as much as I can afford" :D
The card is more for online purchasing convienence than the 'credit' aspect

Actually I like this one better http://www.knifeart.com/theg.html

:D
But it looks like the first purchase may have to go to the Leek

The only way to use one of those evil things is to have the cash in hand/checking account and specifically earmarked for the purchase before proceding with it. My $.02

Young fella, I really recommend that you get a debit card instead of a credit card because you are immediately responsible for what you buy through your bank account. If you do use a credit card, do not buy any more than can easily, and I do mean easily, repay within one month. It is very easy to let a balance build up an the next thing you know, you're up the creek without a paddle. :footinmou

I TOTALLY agree with Anthony. The rush of excitement with one's first credit card soon fades when the you are still paying for a purchase(s) a lear or so later. Have fun but TAKE IT EASY!!!

I agree with the above comments. Be very responsible with it. It's convenient for online purchases--but be careful about running up large balances. The interest rate on your card is probably somewhere around 16-18%. It can get nasty very fast.

I know its not what you want to hear or why you started the thread, But listen to what others have said and CUT IT UP!! Get a debit card. My credit is screwed from irresponsibility and its something that’s hard to fix. Things can get out of hand fast.

;) Advice noted. Been using debit card for long enough, as I said (or have I, don't quite remember, memory is slipping), this is more of a convience thing so that I don't have to run to money order every time I purchase online.

Besides, unless I buy a Scarab, the interest isn't all that significant :p jk, of course I'll make sure I have enough before I buy

while there's still time. And if you don't do that, whatever you do, don't carry it with you. Don't charge things you can't pay off in one month. Don't keep a large revolving balance. If the choice is between your credit card and the Devil, ask yourself if a little cottage by a lake of fire is really all that bad. I learned these things the hard way. Don't do the same. Good luck.

Frank

P.S. If you must put a knife on your card, get an HI khukuri.

Haha I'm 18, what the hell would I do with a Kukri? I love in suburbia, not much to do around here, don't have any big camping trips planned. I don't hunt except that one time I was in the states with cousins bow-hunting for small game. But yeah, for local purchases, I'll be sure to use debit card instead.

Doesn't your debit card have a Visa number on it? I've been using a debit card for years for online purchases.
I stay away from credit cards for all of the reasons given.
Put that thing away in the drawer for a few weeks while you do some research.
Do a little bit of Web research on credit card debt and bankruptcies in America.
Find out exactly how the credit reporting system works. You'll see that if you are late with some payments now--something that you WILL almost certainly do when you're starting out--it will stay on your record for years and make future credit more expensive.
Someday not too far off you'll have to buy a house, and have to go into debt for more money that you've ever seen in your life. The rates you get on that mortgage will be determined by how you handle this credit card. That can make a different of tens of thousands of dollars over many years.
Get your bank to give you a real debit card, with a Visa number. :)

Although they look big and unwieldy, they are perfectly capable of slicing up a credit card. :D

I use mine for yardwork, mainly. And to check out things that go bump in the night. They're just incredible blades.

Haha yeah great idea, while I'm at it, might as well buy a Sandshark and stab it a bit, TAKE THAT VISA!

I have no clue what you mean by credit card number on debit card. My debit card has a debit card on it, and in Canada, debit cards are far more popular than in the States so its no news to me. When I worked at a grocery store as cashier, around 40% of transactions were on debit card. But as I said, credit card I WILL carry around, but will not use for more than online purchasing ;) and for an extra piece of ID.

Oh and what kind of HI Kurkri do you like best?

I am 22 and have yet to get a credit card. It is one of Satans inventions (and yes I really do believe that).

19, legal canada wide... no credit card. If I have to use one for quick payment, I give my folks the cash and use thier visa. 95% of my purchases are done via money orders. A few cash... and I think 2 in the last year on thier card. But always paid on my end before doing it.

My buddy has a 5K limit on his card, and has 2K in credit on it already... he's put cash on his visa, so he can spend up to that 2K without hitting debt. He's putting a little every month in cash on his visa.

Those with good credit garner benefits and have opportunities that those with bad credit never see. Those with no credit history, aren't allowed to play.

That said, get yourself a 18" Ang Khola Khukuri.
