Just got this big German Eye Carl Schlieper #99S-DS stag soddie last week, and what a beautiful hunk of stag and cutting power it is! The saw blade on this one has to be felt to be believed. It has the most aggressive teeth I've ever seen.

Only problem is the saw blade spring. When you go to close it, it has no snap whatsoever. It nearly comes completely down before it goes on it's own. This picture is the point just before the spring pulls it down.

Just to try and figure out what was going on, I opened the drop point blade too, and then tried closing the saw blade. This time it went just a little past half-way before the spring pulled it.

Still not great, but a little better. No one would ever use the saw with the other blade open, but I thought it might tell me something. The spring does seem to work (not strongly, though), but must be rubbing more when the other blade is closed. Any suggestions to improve the spring's pull would be appreciated. Thanks.

Just seems wrong. That saw blade really looks like a 'gator, so it oughta SNAP like one!

Beautiful knife though.

I'm assuming the joints are clean? Some folders are known to come from the factory with too much gunk and/or metal filings in the pivot. Makes 'em sticky & slow to close. If so, a thorough flush with WD-40 might be in order, while simultaneously exercising the pivot.

Have you tried flushing out the joint with some thin oil?

Very often, the facory does not clean them well before shipping, and some of the final buffing compound gets in and gums up the works. Try working the blade back and forth with some oil in the joint and see if any black gunk comes out. I've had this happen to me with a new knife.

Thanks, guys, for the ideas. Used Rem-Oil with the jet straw, and nothing came out after repeated open/close cycles, followed by more oil jet. Just cycling the joint seems to be loosening it up a little, though. I think it's just REAL tight.

Kamagong, here's the pile side--this one has very nice stag!

And one of the top, showing nice straight blades and thick stag. This one's going deer hunting with me next fall. ;)

Sounds like dirt in the joint as has been mentioned, esp with it working better With the master in a different position. Heaven forbid I said this but with a toothpick and some rubbing compound and probably 75 or so cycles you can probably free it up, then with the knife pointing down REALLY flush it out with brake cleaner. Now I'm going to hide and if caught will lie with my right hand on a whole stack of books

Too bad you have the spring issue, it's a great knife. Mine has bear trap springs. And you're right about the saw, it cuts like nobody's business.

I wish Carl did not have that friggin eye staring at me. I have not bought any because of his logo. Is that stupid or what?

Ummm, do not feel obligated to answer that....:o

Hi black mamba -

I can't add anything with regards to your question/problem, but boy is that some beautiful stag!

Thanks for posting the pictures.

best regards -

black mamba love that stag. i believe overall the germans have improved in the stag dept.the earlier carbon steel in eyes will cut up there with 95 % of the newer alloys. however do'nt pry with the carbon blades. their stainless would beat any 440c put in knives by u. s. manufac.

Nothing further to add concerning the spring, but that is one cool soddie in so many respects: the stag, the saw blade, the bolster, the nail nicks!

No, CJ. It ain't stupid. Everybody's got their own preferences about these type of things. Nothin' wrong with that. ;)

In general, I'd rather not see excessive etchings/logos on the blade itself, although I can live with the etch on the Eye Brand/Schlieper knives. I have one of the Eye Brand large soddies w/brown synthetic handle (it's a very nice knife in it's relative simplicity), and I've been tempted for a long while to get one of these stag beauties. I do like the 'Eye' tang stamp. It's instantly recognizable, with a LOT of history behind it (they've been marking their knives this way for decades), kind of like the CASE XX mark, or the Henckels Twins, or Hen & Rooster, or the 'Q' with the knife & crown on Queen's knives. To me, these are classy marks that just look 'right' on the tang.

I have a similar big German Eye with only a blade, and the spring is rather weak on that model.

He did not really post that :D.

I have been known to improvise a little too with break cleaner, "Gun Scrubber", WD 40 and even hot water. ;)

using gun scrubber & brake cleaner is fine if you do it outside. also watch out when using these products on synthetic liners or handles.

that slow spring would turn out 2 b a blessing,u wouldnt want all those sharp teeth digging in2 youre fingers.

Mamba i have the same 99S DS. carried it regularly and use it in mainly landscaping type jobs for last 3 years. lots of grit in the 'works' right now, but saw blade snaps shut quite firmly from about 45-60 degrees.
Super great work knife. the blade takes a sharp edge and really holds it. the saw cuts quickly too.
AGR sells a sturdy sheath that fits it perfectly.
