Big Fixed Blades?

So do you own a big fixed blade? Which I'll say is anything over 6 inches. If so what do you find it useful for and in what cirumstances? Surely it can't be a good EDC for most people can it?

Opinions appreciated.

I have a Trace Rinaldi Armageddon SKS set. For those that are not aware this is a 10" main blade with a 3" add-on.

This is in no way an EDC knife for me. It is very useful when I go away camping and spending time in the woods as there is nothing like it for chopping stuff!

Regards,

Ed

I don't own any yet, but I have one eight inch bowie on order and will be ordering more. These will not be EDCs. I really don't need anything over four inchs for that purpose. The reason that I am starting to get myself some bowies is that I love them. Will they get used, maybe, but not likely. They will be worn though.

I have a Swamp Rat Battle Rat and HI BAS Khukuri! :D

They are both awesome knives, but I can't see using them for anything else than yard work and in the outdoors. It's not exactly the kind of knife you'd want to EDC...

I have a Custom bowie with a 11" blade that i just recieved a few weeks ago. Its a great knife, made from S30V steel. I went camping and it was very helpful for chopping firewood and splitting forewood as well as most other camp tasks. I ordered it for the purpose of being a tough all around camp/survival knife and it does its job well. I also have another big knife on order but i think it would fall into the sword catagory. Its going to be a 21" blade katana style sword. For martial arts practice. I also am looking into getting a 8" blade fighter made up.

I'll agree on the edc part as far as my lifestyle goes where a small fixed blade or folder would cover every-day tasks, but on a camping trip they are indespensible.
I do not carry a cycle, so on my land they are usefull for clearing out brush, chopping in a pinch and numerous other camp chores.

I had five large trees fall in my back yard during a storm; for me a large fixed blade was invaluable in cleaing the mess and seperating branches from the trunks. In many cases using a big knife was more efficient than an axe or hatchet since the debris was very thick. The larger knife enabled me to clear the small debris in order to get clean swings from an axe on larger limbs or getting clearance for a chainsaw. A big blade for clearing unsupported brush and 2 inch and smaller unsupported limbs dispaches those types of tasks much easier than an axe or hatchet.

If I was in a position of clearing brush daily a big long blade would be one of my edc's as well as a smaller fixed blade or folder.

I have 3 large knives; Ontario/Bagwell Hell's Belle (11 inch blade), Ontario Frontiersman (11 inch blade), and a SOG Tigershark (9 inch blade), as well as a Cold Steel Gurkha Kukri (12 inch blade). I just like big knives.

7" Blackjack #1-7: my primary camping blade for years.
7" BK&T BK7: now gets used in the Blackjack's place.
Both of those get used for light limbing, convenient carry for cutting stickers and vines out of your way in heavy brush, and with a baton for sectioning wood, or splitting kindling and firewood. Both are lighter and more convenient to carry than a hatchet, and have a wider range of use. They're probably not ideal for any of the things I use them for, but are great all-around tools when you'd rather carry one versatile blade, than several specialized ones.
9 13/16" Busse Basic 9: my "heavy" beater, used for thick brush, small trees, limbing. It's mostly for clearing, and yard work, and hasn't made it on a camping trip because of its size.
14" BK&T Patrol Machete: for clearing smaller stuff, especially briars (we have plenty) which make the extra length welcome.
16" Ontario machete: preceded the Becker, but doesn't get used much any more-doesn't even have handles of any kind on it at the moment.

All of my "normal" use is with smaller knives, ranging from 2.5" to 4.5", but there are some things those smaller blades just can't do.

Oh, over 6inches is a big blade for you ;)
i carry a folder nearly this large ED - my Sifu.

But Ok you asked for fixed, just searched my knives for some:

I guess it is the cowboy movie watchin' little kid in me ;) The other kids wanted a six shooter...me I wanted a Bowie Knife!
I bring the bottom one camping and hiking.
And I definately sleep better with that bad girl under my pillow :D

Edited to include: I chop with an axe, cut wood with a saw & carry the bowie 'cause I can :)

I guess it's all relative. I tend to consider anything over 10" as a short sword, not a knife. But that's just me.

Thanks for the replies everyone.

I got a big Brend and a sub-hilt Bauchop Alley Cat. If I was going going to the woods the Brend would come with me but I haven't had the chance yet.

Guess I should get a Sog Tigershark just in case I have to beat the hell out of it.

I own 3 custom large fixed blade knives (8" - 9 1/4" blades) & having at least 2 more made this year. They are not my EDC's; my EDC is a small Schrade stockman. I like them for the workmanship, weight, feel & just think they look great! They seem to be the knives that everyone asks about.

3 Actually...

Swamp Rat Battle Rat, which will be my new camp knife. Also have a Swamp Rat Camp Tramp inbound.
Cold Steel Recon Tanto, everyone has got to have a least one big Tanto.
SOG Seal 2000, my current camp knife.

Big blades are great for campsite duties and working over the firewood and are still suitable for those short exploratory hikes from camp.

Swamp Rat Camp Tramp.

The Ron Popiel version of a knife... It slices, it dices, it hacks, chops and 'll even do your around the yard pruning.

I've owned several big knives. Becker's BK-7, BK-1 and BK-9 , About three or four of Bill Siegle's excellent big boys, Newt Livesays RTAK (X 3 of those)Blackjacks including a Simba Bolo and I recently added a SwampRat Camp Tramp. The Camp Tramp is a sweety that functions well with that BIG front choil. It's easy to choke up on. I'm currently moving to a 4.75" blade as a regular carry simply because the big knives tend to offer less control and a bit more bulk for humping around on various operations. I think they are just great overall, this is just my personal choice.

What?!? No KA-BAR? :D

An old Case bowie with a 9" blade that was my Grandpa's. It's still in nearly mint condition. And I have three HI khukuris. An 18" WWII and a pair of 25" sirupatis. The khuks are my axe replacements. Limbs, stumps, old fence material, whatever. The sirus will chop through just about anything. And if I ever have to fight Orcs I have something that'll go through light armor ;)

Well I told myself I wouldn't, but I've gone and done it. Battle Rat order has been confirmed. I'm happy about it really, I just hope I'll get enough use out of it for it to be worth having. I should be ableto use it when I go to Florida though.
