A few months back, I purchased a Cold Steel Voyager XL. I did so mostly for giggles; however, I was pleasantly surprised when I began using it, only to discover that it's a really useful knife that offers a lot of utility, especially when performing large cutting tasks in my garage or in the campsite.

With that, I decided to try another big folder, the Cold Steel Rajah II. Once again, I've been pleasantly surprised. This past weekend, I took the knife with me on a backwoods camping trip and put it through it's paces. It did a great job with a number of tasks around the campsite; however, where it really excelled was on the trail. I went camping in a new area, and I didn't think that I'd need a machete, but as it turns out, I did. I had to make my way through some very dense undergrowth that was loaded with pricker brush, some of which was bigger around than my thumb. The first time I got snagged, I thought to myself, "Man, why didn't the landowner tell me I'd need a machete!" Then I remembered the Rajah II in my pocket, and out it came. It was every bit as effective as a small machete and turned what would have been a miserable experience into an enjoyable one.

I'm a big-folder believer now. They have earned a place in my knife collection as useful tools.

Has anyone else had a similar experience? I realize that not everyone likes Cold Steel; however, manufacturer aside, I'd be interested in hearing from those who have an appreciation for folding knives in this size-class.

Thanks,
Kels73

You're not the only one. This is what I carry.

Two Rajah 2s?

Isn't that the definition of overkill?

I've EDC'ed the XL Voyager clip point myself, although I switched to the 4" large version after finding it just a little too large for daily usage.

Lately, my kick has been matched sets. Imagine the psychological effect on a MF'er when you produce these things in a split second, open in reverse grip.

I edc the xl tanto voyager. It makes sense because it's the voyager that has less width so it takes the least pocket space. Its large, but not wide, like the other models in the series. Same objection with the rajah 2.
Great jack of all trades if you get used to it.

I have an XL Voyager, I don't carry it much...

The problem is the handle is so damn long. I don't like the feeling of 2+ inches of FRN sticking out the bottom of my fist. Some kind of folding protective extension like the Benchmade LFK had would be nice if they could make it durable and user-friendly.

Speaking of psychological effect (AKA mind fu@#ing) I gave some thought to pairing a SD knife with a custom made tactical/SD fork. Imagine the psychological effect when you whip out knife and a fork and start licking your lips. The perp' might have a change of heart.:D

The highest I can go is my monstrous Endura. Anything larger takes up too much pocket space and is too long to fit in my pocket.

I cringed when I first saw this knife. To me, it's sacrificing part of the point of XL folders, which is the extra handle length and reach. To me, it's sacrificing functionality for the sheer aesthetic of it when it's open, but it looks like some horrendous abortion of a folder from the reject pile when closed. No, thanks.

Just my opinion, you can take it or leave it.

This is basically how I feel about my XL Voyager's handle.

I'm not exaggerating either :D

Yes, it chops, but I don't chop with it. Prefer a normal-length handle for my everyday tasks.

The long handle doesn't bother me; but admittedly, I don't typically choke down when using the XL Voyager. The Rajah II is a different story though, especially when I use it like a machete. I find that choking down offers a big advantage when chopping through brush and vines because of the change in weight distribution and because of the extra reach. But when all is said and done, handle length is a matter of preference, and I can see why someone might not like the XL Voyager's handle.

On a different note, I'm surprised no one commented on my Rajah II's stonewashed finish, which is now standard for the Rajah series. Unfortunately, my grainy cell-phone picture doesn't do it justice. I think it looks really sweet!

I have a BM adamas and never use it, I'd rather use a fixed blade when needing summon' so large

And yeah, that BM LFK is an abhorrent freak of nature

Kels73, glad you like 'em, it just shows there's someone for every knife and a knife for everyone,

CharlieMike, you were wild once, glad to see sobriety hasn't tamed you

Ha ha, that is funny.

I've always liked big folders, even if all I do is carry them. I've said, a bunch of times, that my SAK Fieldmaster is all I really need. But it is fun, for me at least, to carry a well built, nicely made, larger folder. The extent of my larger folders is my newest one, a Fox/Citadel Deimos @ 4.54".

Horrendous abortion of a folder. That is still funny. Good 'un Kwon!:)
