Hi, all.

I'm looking for a knife for my brother's birthday. He wants a serious one, bigger the better. Personally I don't care for ungainly folders, but it's not for me!

Lifetime Spyderco fan... looking at Military. Any others?

Thanks so much!
Alex

I really like my Cold Steel X2 Voyager (this has the straighter edge as compared to the Vaquero Grande, which is also a good knife). After watching one of the test videos, I decided that I could try one for $60. It's a big knife with huge cutting potential, a very sharp edge from the factory, a super-strong lock, a decently comfortable Zytel handle, and a big pocket clip. It's a really nice knife for the whole $60 I paid for it.

However, I do carry my Spyderco Military more; it's slimmer, weighs next to nothing for its size. The trade-off is about two inches of blade lenght, but the S30V steel holds an edge and the G10 handles are great. The Military is more expensive, but worth it. I've also got a Chinook II, but I like my Military alot more. In fact, it was the knife I carried on my trek to the Philmont Scout Ranch.

In summary, if you're going for a little price and a big blade and carry is no concern, go for the Vaquero Grande or the X2. If you're going for a very high quality folder that will do anything you need it to and carries very nicely and slimly, get the Military. Both, again, are excellent. Be forewarned, however, that the 6-inch X2 is longer than the 4" blade length that most juridstictions have. At 3-13/16", the Military fits under this. I hope this was informative and helped. God bless you, America, and our men and women overseas.

Wade

Go for a manix and never look back. It will serve you with unquestioning loyalty.

The Military is set up for tip down carry only, if that is a consideration. I prefer tip up.

If "big" is what he is after, the Manix fits the bill a little better than the 710, but the 710 feels better in the hand (to me) and opens smoother.

cheers

I like Benchmades so the 710 would be a good one but here is some more. Kershaw JYD2, Cold Steel Recon 1, Blade-Tech Pro Hunter, Kershaw Cyclone, and for a few more dollars a Benchmade Mini Rukus, also Spyderco Manix and Military. I know there are more but these are some pretty good ones. THANK YOU! Kevin:) :) :) :) :) Also Spyderco Persian if you can find one.

You might look at the Benchmade 740 . Its a new knife this year for benchmade . 4" blade . Just saw one for 99.99 on the ebay. Its just a little longer than the 710.

Wow, thanks for the advice, everyone! Much appreciated.

I'm not sure I can resist going with a Cold Steel knife... I've never owned one before (and hey, it's a gift! So if it's terrible, well... it's not mine :D). And for the price, it looks like a lot of knife.

Thanks again!

Lone Wolf Harsey -- big, strong, smooth, and beautiful. S30V, titanium liners, several sizes and handle scales.

Could be the perfect folder.

Military or Manix. I perfer the Miilitary because it is thinner and lighter but if this is not an issue, the Manix is a brute of a knife.
