Well, tonight makes the deer count 3 for the season. My genuine copy of Rodgers knife is still going strong and my new rifle is unbelievable.

For you small bore shooters (50 cal) this is why I have only been making 58's and up the last few years. Tonights deer was a tough shot. It was in heavy brush and there were a lot of dead, down trees.

The deer was browsing and moving away from me and there was about 5 minutes of light left. I wouldn't have tried this shot with anything smaller than a 58 but I waited until there was a window about 6" wide in the thicket and made a Texas Heart Shot.

That 58cal ball went in the backsides and out the chest taking everything in between. You gotta love big balls :o

As I have come to expect, the new knife did everything with ease.

Life is good in the woods....now if I just didn't have to face work in the morning :(

Glad I'm not from Texas...

Texas heart shot ??? you could have aimed a little higher and taken the neck and saved all the mess. That's how we do it in NY.And small bore too, 45-70.

Didn't you know that you need an inline with a super magnum whiz bang sabot load to kill a deer?

Nice
I shoot a .54, a little quick math would say that your .58 is about 30-35 grains heavier (250?). That oughta be great, a little more smack without the drop in velocity you get going to a buffalo bullet.

Now that you've got the field dress test done on that knife I guess the only thing thats left is to kill one with it? ;)

I couldn't hit the neck Mete. It was browsing and had it's head down the whole time. I would have passed the shot if I wasn't sure about getting the penetration.

And small bore too, 45-70
I'm building a sharps now. It's a 45/120. I plan on using it for squirrels :footinmou :D

I tried inlines for a while Matt and I shot Power Belts for one season. After shooting four deer, all good lung shots and all clipping a rib, I never got an exit hole. They (powerbelts) kill well if the shot is perfect, otherwise it's gonna be a long night. I don't have anything against inlines, I just like flintlocks and percussion side locks better.

I shoot a 54 and I've never had a problem putting a whitetail down yet. Like you on one occassion I shot an 8 pointer coming at me angling abit to the left and the ball broke the right front shoulder, passed though the cavity and out the left hip. I wouldn't want anything smaller then my 54 though. I've got 2 neighbors that are carring damascus knives I've made and they've both reported working up 6 deer each and they still haven't needed to resharpened yet. Got to love a good custom made knife. ;)

How many deer you wanting Peter ?? And I couldn't agree with you more, life is good in the woods. A little over a week left before rifle season starts here, so this next week will be a very serious bow huntin week.

have fun at work, :)

Bill

Bill, I've already gotten all the meat I need but the area is really overcrowded with Deer. One of the people I rent land from works for the Game Commission and he asked me to thin them down as much as possible.

I expect I'll quit at 8 and my son will get the same. I missed bow season because I was just too busy to shoot as much as I normally do. I won't hunt if I don't feel I'm up to making good clean kills.

Here I can use my muzzleloader through the regular season so I stick with it the entire season.

I have a 62 cal smoothbore almost finished. That's going turkey hunting this spring.

I was just kiddin on the inline comment. I can see where they have their place but prefer sidelocks myself. I just think its funny that that crowd doesn't think a 220-250 grain ball will kill a deer, but think their 200 grain wonderbullet is good out to 250 yards (have actually seen guys ask about zeroing this far on other forums!)

Nice shootin Peter. One neat thing about a round ball is it doesnt expand and blow off a hind quarter. Im thinking about making a big smooth bore for next year. Did our buddy drill the 62 cal? I still havent gotten the liner I ordered.

Sure did. I have yet to find a barrel maker I like better.

I need to talk to him in a day or two. I'll see if I can nudge him some.

Some years ago I built a 62 rifled percussion in an English style. It works great on white tails. I once got a very large 10 pointer that I shot in the chest and the ball went full length to the rear -- needless to say he didn't go very far. Got to love those big bores. :D

OKie deer guns

Way to go Don :D My three favorite things, guns, deer and knives :D I'm pretty fired up right now as the rut is increasing in intensity around here. I'll be hitting the woods hard the next few weeks bow hunting for the biggin' :D God I love this time of year!
Scott
and yes life is good :D

You guys here never disappoint me! Today, I gotta give special credit to Sweany (a gold mine of great humor and advice) and Don, with his fabulous skills of a man than can do it all, and certainly do it well! I used to use a.58 sidelock with the 500gr. slugs. Now, that's stopping power! Back to you, Don, that's some great hunting and report, fella.
