BIG Hog

Holy smokes  .... That right there is a serious chunk of bacon.

Is this edible? :)

Serious question. There was a thread a looong time ago here about wild pig hunting in Texas. I learned here that those pigs aren't edible, but they are pests.

I second that question. And have another.

There is a wild Hog epidemic in the USA. I've read that the government admits that it's out of control and a hazard to the ecosystem. Yet, farmers and ranchers charge an arm and a leg to hunt pests on their property. Is that fact ? I'm just curious....

I thought I heard somewhere the meat from pest pigs was donated to homeless shelters, etc. I was watching the U.S. of Bacon and some of the best bacon is wild pig.

I do not consider any variety of swine to be edible, which I know sounds like sacrilege to those who frequent this forum.....

BUT, for anybody who cares to do a little light reading then check out this link and scroll down to 'The Other White Meat'.

How delicious it would be if it were slow cooked on a spit turning slowly... now's a good time to quit the diet.

Just like always they made the Hog look much bigger than it is. The man is standing way back from the Hog and a wide angle lens was used to get this affect.

Big pig, but it hasn't been running around in the woods very long. They don't get that big living in the wild.
Like the big ones killed here in GA and TX it was likely in the woods for a short time before killed. Some people catch wild baby pigs and raise them(a friend/neighbor of mine did for years), and when they get to big for them many give or sell them to game ranches. After that they don't last long as they don't fear people like a true wild hog thats lived its whole life wild.

That is one big hog, that's for sure. I can't help but think of The Lion King when I see that picture though...

The interesting thing about hogs is that they grow throughout their entire life. They never stop growing. Ken is correct. Wild pigs very rarely grow beyond 450 lbs in the wild. The biggest of the feral hogs I've shot consistently seem to peak around the 350 lb range. Although my uncle shot one on our place that was 450 easily. To grow as large as that pig in the picture I believe someone raised it on a pretty high calorie diet.

For the record, the pigs around 100 lbs and under are the ones you want to eat. Big boars tend to taste like they smell. Not good. :barf:
