Got my hands on a Busse Fusion Battle Mistress a couple weeks ago - belongs to a friend. Absolutely stellar.

I've got my heart set on one, or something like it, but they seem to be hard to come by. Know of any current production knives that come close?

Thanks

Any current production knives that come close? Well, depending on how close you want, it's either yes or no. There are other large production knives that are tough and chop well, but they're not quite the FBM. I would recommend getting the real thing. It's hard, but it was worth it to me. It's a buyer's market in Busses right now, so checking around the Busse forum and exchange here at Bladeforums would be a good idea, and would probably net you a Battle Mistress sooner rather than later. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=804

I agree. I would get the real thing. IMHO it is worth it to get the steel. INFI really is all that.

There's a bunch of companies that make military styled combat knives that are similar. The best are from Busse. Scrap Yard and Swamp Rat are subsidiaries of Busse, and their choppers, like the Dogfather and Rat Daddy, rock. Also look at Ranger knives, Ontario's Randall's Adventure & Training (RAT) line, Tops, and Rat Cutlery.

Ranger knives RD I guess will be closest and less expensive with very good steel:

Fehrman more expensive but with CPM 3V

I probably get Fehrman over Busse.

Thanks, Vassili.

If you follow the Busse exchange on this site over the next few weeks I bet you'll see a few up for sale since the NM FBM is mailing out this week. I bet someone will unload one for pretty darn close to cost. Or they will be on evilbay for an (un)fair mark up. Any CG under 500 bucks is a deal. Few others will compare with a Busse in a big chopper. YMMV

I have been using my FBM for near two years now and it is still a BadAss!!! I have a Dogfather as well but there is a MASSIVE difference!!!! Go for the FBM if you can...

Since you’ve use these knives for two years now, could you post some current pictures of them?
These knives look like they’re new.
Hard to see the ‘massive difference’ when looking at unused knives. :D

Here's one I've used hard since they first shipped out over a year ago. I've cut up half a ton of wood with it and abused it plenty as well:

Looks much nicer now.

Look Closer(bearcut) at the FBM, it is Well Used. The Dogfather less but still used...

I own the old version, the Busse Battle Mistress, and I have abused that thing to the limit. Including heavy wood chopping, and light prying. The dang thing stil begs me for more. Got no more hard wood left now...

I'm not a Busse fan, but I gotta admit that the BM is probably the toughest large fixed blade ever built.

Fehrman also makes excellent knives. You can't go wrong with either.

In real life, of course, you don't see the massive difference, you feel it during use. Quite like you can find out how a car performs only by driving it, and not just staring at photographs of the car whether said photos be of the car as new and shiny or after a muddy trek to the cabin. :p :D

I dont know but that big busse looks like its been doin some choppin to me. The sheath is sweet and looks new but you dont do much swingin of the leather in the woods. The dfle looks like new but what do i know? I used to have a rtakII and for the money its a great chopper. IMHO...

You can get very fair prices on CGFBMs and FFBMs right now. A lot of people are selling them to fund their new NMFBMs

Ranger knives makes sweet knives (I own several)

Fehrman knives are also sick...CPM3V is some tuff stuff

I got really good service from the Kershaw Outcast in D2. About 80.00 Ten inch blade I believe.

I just notice pretty nice knives from Ontario in knife Center.

In general it is combination od RD7 and RD8 blade with SP Kraton handle.
It is flat ground from the spine 5160 steel blade. Called SP2.

Cost $59 but I think it will be less then this when it will be everywhere.

Thanks, Vassili.
