What does this have to do with khukuris?
Everything!!!!:D

Who made that Bowie, Yvsa?

I've always thought the brass back-edge-of-the-blade-catcher-thingy was a good idea... imagine finding an old Bowie with one that had defense marks....

Great catch, Yvsa:D!
Man, i'm a sucker for bowies. Like Mike, i've always been a big fan of the brass strip on the back of fighting knives. What are the specs on that beautiful deadly thing? Makes me want to go home and break out the Rose for a workout. What a great collection you must have:)

Mike a place called Imperial Weapons has them made in the Philippines. Hand forged 1060 and then hand ground. Comes with a working edge according to some guys that have already got theirs. The somewhat sharp clip is easily brought to shaving according to them as well.:D  :D

This is the place to get what's left.

Yup, would be more than interesting to find one with defense marks on a brass or copper back. This is one of the better renditions I've seen. Copper would be Awesome, Spectacular, Magnificent, Stupendous, ETC. on the back of a Bowie!!!!
Especially when it reached a full patina!!!! :D

Nice looking knife. I'd looked at that one before and considered getting it.

Really though, I have enough bowies.

I think HW or someone turned me on to it when I first joined. Is that the Musso?

The actual purpose of that brass thing is something of a mystery. I asked on the Bernard Levine forum, and the answer was that no one really knew. I can't imagine that thing being used as a defense. (I don't think you'll find that brass guard on appropriately aged pieces, either) The first time I heard this I thought:  It's also been theorized that this could be used to strengthen the bowie, but it's brass, so that's not a good answer either. Personally I think someone got bored one day and stuck it on for looks.

I read somewhere the softer brass would cushion a strike from an opponents steel blade. Possibly it would trap it a little, helping you twist the other guys blade away. The brass wouldn't strengthen anything but would add weight.

dunno if true- seems so- I'm an amateur historian, not a cuchillero (knife-fighter)

Walking Man the brass can trap a blade and keep an opponent's blade from sliding down the spine as long as pressure is kept on the other knife.
I have the big Case Bowie with the added brass strip and have tried it for myself.
Copper would be better IMO but may not be as easy to put on as brass is.
It would definitely take a skilled smith to install the brass strip without losing the temper on the edge! :D

Yup, it's the Musso.:D Only thing different from the original is that the blade is a couple of inches shorter.
Still a damned good buy for $199.00;) :D

Jake, here's the spec's. Can you imagine a 13-1/4" blade like on the original? :D

Blade Length: 11 1/4"
Overall Length: 16 1/4"
Handle Material: Exotic Hardwood
Weight: 1 lb 9 oz.

On one site it says the handle is Mahogany. It appears the handle may be painted and if it is it may be a good candidate for some woodchucking, we'll have to wait and see.;) :D

At the recent local Rennaissance Faire,
met the guy that founded/owns/runs Imperial Weapons.

Good guy.
Good sharp things from what I could tell at the table.
You'll find him at many other Faires.

He mentioned a possible future addition of kukri/kukris.
