Been going through the custom section, but there are more knives than my tiny brain can process. I’ve also been looking at production knives as well. I’ve come to this:

Recommend me some good, big knives. This can be production, semi custom, or full custom. Pig stickers, Bowie’s, and the like. Parameters below. And of course, pictures encouraged. :D

Material: Stainless

Blade length: Between 9.5” and 11”

Blade width: No more than 2” preferably under

Blade thickness: Preferably as far below .25” as possible without risking strength

Handle: Natural material preferred, but would not turn down a good looking/functioning synthetic material

Price: Let’s not get too crazy here. Say under $500

Let’s see what you can come up with. I’ll sit back for a while. I’m very interesting in reading responses, and hopefully seeing some good pictures full up this thread.

I can also do this in stainless.

Really like doing this without a guard. Then I call it the Tehachapi Saddle Bowie.

Take a look at Black Jack knives. Well made Randall clones at much lower cost.

Hmm big blade needs tougher steel which generally means carbon steel, or 3v. Or INFI but that generally comes in 1/4" thick slabs. Are you looking for a working chopper or a designated fighter? If you could find a Bark River golok or Dakar in 3v you could have a maker regrind the shape if desired, that gets you 11 or so inches of .200 3v.

Or of course Google Nathan Carrothers aka the machinist

But for my money skip the stainless & go BIG - 13.5" x 3/16"

For that budget you could commission a custom maker on here to make one to your specs. There are plenty here making big knives in tough, hard use steels.

Great suggestions. I appreciate it! You have helped decide which direction I need to go. I don’t think I need a full 11” but 8.5-9” I think would be a sweet spot. I love Busse for everything they are, but they are pretty much huge, deadly blades. Got a few of those already :D:thumbsup:

Every time someone say big knife. I always have the Bark River 1909 Michigan Bowie coming to my mind.

That is beauty to my eyes, and the definition of a big Bowie in my brain. Shape, size, and blade profile. I’m not a big fan of A2, it likes to rust on me very quickly. Does it come in another steel, not necessarily stainless, but with a bit more corrosion resistance?

7.5" from tip to guard approx 1/4" stock. That's my sweet spot.

I saw this knife in your other thread. I really like your taste in bigger knives, and the styles you like compliment mine. If it was a shade thinner stock, about an inch and a half longer, and the width was knocked down to about 1.5” instead of what looks to be about 2” or a hair more, it would be about perfect and what I’ve been looking for. What’s the chances I can pick up a Patton like that for under 500 bucks though..(even if I supply the steel)?

Thanks again guys. Very helpful and much appreciated. Merry Christmas to all.

Ask Charlie Mike Charlie Mike , you could be surprised what you can get for the budget you have in mind...

Mine is 1.75" at the widest point and that's about as wide as I want to go. I supplied the steel (Z-tuff) and he charged me 525.

Avoid the busse, get a Carrothers. I went the opposite way and was disappointed.

I love Busse knives and have had several. They are big, beefy, death before destruction knives. Those Light Choppers might be something to look at. I hear the delta heat treat on the 3V is second to none.

IMO, it is. Toughest steel I've used in a knife to date and easy peasy to bring back to sharp.
