This actually one of the first blades I ever forged, several years ago. It sat around collecting dust and rust for a couple years, then I listed it for sale as a bare blade, and someone claimed it, and this is the finished product.

As always, any comments welcome.

Steel: 5160

Hardness: 59-60

Blade length: 14-1/2"

Total length: 19-5/8"

Blade thickness: 1/4"

Handle material: black micarta with spacers

Thanks for looking!

Enjoyed the look again! (just saw this one in knifemakers gallery:D)

Excellent job Phil! I like it aLOT!

Phillip,

That series of shapes, repeating and mirroring, from butt to tip, and the repeating sets of spacers, are a real coup.

Will it be at Blade?

John

Well, isn't that nice?

One good thing is that you were probably able to get more money for the knife than you would have a couple of years ago.

Thanks everyone for your comments! I must confess that I didn't particularly enjoy making this one, but I really like the finished product. :D It was very challenging to make. The blade is of course double edged, which means it's about the same as making two knives. Keeping the sweeping plunge grinds identical on each side can be nerve wracking.
And then there's the shoulders where the guard butts up against, which had to be curved to match the guard... And then keeping the handle symmetrical while making sure it's lined up with the center line of the blade....
This knife (or whatever it is) has a total of 28 pieces, made of 5 different materials.

Hi John,
Thanks!
This one was a custom order, so won't be at Blade for that reason, but also, I won't be there for other reasons. Maybe next year! I'm looking forward to meeting you, as well as many others here.

Fortunately, I don't think I quoted him a price when the order was placed. ;)

Someone asked for better pictures of the blade, so I tinkered with my light box a little, and here's what the new ones look like:

Very beautiful, faultless and very balanced workmanship,I like for his simplicity and effectiveness as he must be a dagger-the blade is equal to the gladius that my ancestors used in the eighth century before Christ-
Still compliments!

Thanks fellas! I think this is one of my favorite leaf blades so far.

I forgot to mention that the guard was forged out of 7/8" round 440C, and the pommel was forged from 1" round 416. Here's some photos of it as it was in process:
