Well, after experiecing the world of cold steel and benchmade and numerous others....yesterdag I decided to try something totally different.
I bought myself a Laguiole. A real one....coz there are many many fakes out there!
I must say..this is one hell of a knife! It's 23 centimeters long, brass endpieces, horn inlay and 12c27 blade. It's marked:"Laguiole en aubrac" and the symbol is a bulls-head.
First impressions: It came not as sharp as my benchmades but since it's from a shop...maybe someone already 'tested it'..so I cant be sure. Fit and finish is good, absolutely no bladeplay! Action is kind of stiff but that also provides a decent lock-up..without an actual lock there...makes it safer to use IMO.
There is some filework on the blade and spine....nothing very impressive..but does ad to the picture
OK, about the blade: I already stated it wasn't as sharp as my others.....but can it be that it cuts better???
..that thin grind cuts like hell!!!
and the blade is really long so its useful for a variaty of jobs.
Yet another thing to impress me: Its a CUSTOM!!
...these knives are made by 1 craftsman who starts from scratch and finishes the entire product. That's the definition of custom, no?
It's got all the papers and stuff to make sure it's a real one. If I really wanted, I could also visit their shop!....would be interesting to see
Laguiole knives are already more then 100 years old....they were used by the French shepards for an all-round-knife. They have a slim profile, but they sure are durable! I cant see this thing break under normal cutting use!....and wearing out parts is just out of the question due to the simplicity of the design. To make it short: those shepards made due with their laguioles for more than 50 years without anyy probs...so I don't see myself destroying one fast
This one....is really gonna be a user. it's beautifull and practical....but since it was reasonabully priced (60 euro's) I think I'll make it a user. See how it holds up.
I have some pics of it....but can't post them, so if anyone likes to see them, just pop me an email. (or if anyone would like to post them here for me?)
Take care, Davy
