Big Money 120--But It Ain't Right

That's sad.

Too bad they don't know enough to come here and ask a question first.

:thumbdn:

The seller is probably just stupid.

If you blocked for that you'd have to block about half the knife sellers on e-Bay.

;)

The war ended in early '73 and the knife is marked '68 and looks to be an '81.

He's stupid to sell stuff he doesn't understand and it's stupid to lie about the stuff you sell.

Either way he's stupid.

I don't see a way for him to come out of it looking smart, do you?

;)

He listed it "5th special forces knife buck 120 1968 vietnam war."

By listing it that way he's representing this knife as a 1968 Vietnam war knife.

It is not.

Therefore, his buyer will get his 500 bucks back and the seller will get two things.....his knife back and a neg. He will also lose his fees and expenses.

Not a smart way to do business.

Here is another 120 that is questionable. Note the strange shape of the tip of the blade. It has been broken off and reground. How does one know:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300448935345&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

1. He shows the blade length as 7 3/8 while the actual blade length of a 120 of that era is 7 3/4-7 7/8. Where did the 3/8 to 1/2 inch go?

2. I wrote him and he knew it but did't change his description.

fortunately, thus far, it seems the bidders (0) seem to recognize the problem too.

BG, I was aware of that fact. I even made several comments in that thread. I just couldn't find it quickly.

Am I missing something here? With everyone including Joe Houser telling him that the knife was a regrind, shouldn't he have made some mention of that fact for those out there who might not be familiar with the early 120s?

I noted that in that thread that you mentioned that the OAL of the 120 was 7 5/8". I just pulled two barrel nut 120s and 2 pinned BUCK 120s. Actually the barrel nuts were 7 7/8" and the pinned pommel BUCKS were 7 3/4" When the BUCK USA (1968) knives appeared, it seems they settled down to a standard 7 5/8" OAL. Now that I think of it, I didn't measure the BUCK* so it might have been earlier.

Yes, I agree that if you know of a flaw you should mention the flaw. Some people don't, and that's a lie of omission.

Also, if you represent something as a certain thing (Vietnam Knife) you should be sure it is, indeed, a Vietnam Knife. If you are not certain.....you should say that you are not certain and caution the buyer to do some checking before bidding.

Buyers get mad when it turns out they got something other than what they thought......and they will neg the seller (and these days the seller can't even neg them back).

As to the 120 lengths......I just have limited general knowledge and, in the ones I own, I've noticed that the older ones are generally slightly over 7 1/2 inches and the newer ones are generally slightly UNDER 7 1/2 inches. I suppose they vary some.

I have never owned a barrel-nut Buck so I didn't know ANY 120s got to 7 7/8ths.

I have sold on e-Bay, but these days I mostly watch and buy occasionally and I am amused and amazed by the stuff I see.

This is why I say always use the credit card option on Paypal and never buy in haste.

:)

BG you are so right. Even though PayPAl wants you to let them directly withdraw from your bank account that is a terrible mistake. Some time ago, I purchased an $1100 item and the seller gratefully accepted my payment but overlooked sending the item. He couldn't be reached and had drawn down his payment from PayPal. I had used a credit card, but PayPal wants a distressed buyer to first let them resolve the issue. So, technically, I gave them first crack at it. About 10 minutes after notifying them, I placed the transaction in dispute with my credit card. The credit card promptly investigated it and shortly thereafter refunded my payment. About a month later, PayPal notified me that their investigation revealed that the seller did indeed abscond with the money. They expressed their "sincere" sympathy for my problem but said that there was nothing further they could do. USE A CREDIT CARD!!!!!

I was a little surprised at the diminishing length of the 120s also. Out of curiosity, I measured two BUCK 120 USA knives and found them both to be 7 3/8" in length. Those old barrel nuts were honkers at 7 7/8" long.

maybe its just me,but i figure its up to me to know what im buying and not rely on an unknown persons knowledge/honesty before spending the big bucks.

That would be fine if you could always know everything, but you can't.

Seller integrity is important. Actually, the harder the sellers try, the better it is for everybody and the more everybody will sell.
