BIG NEWS POST #4: Caswell Morphing Karambit

I have high hopes that this leads to an affordable (to me) production model, looking forward to seeing a BF member review

@JCaswell had mentioned in the Kickstarter that a manufacturer had picked up the design for 2019 production, I think someone said it was a European one. Probably Fox.

:D Then buy the quality version from Caswell.

The higher cost goes towards better materials and fit and finish.
Yeah but other manufacturers can manage to put together decent knives for a fair price, CRKT history is very spotty in this regard. And I think it's a neat concept, but as this will be little more than a novelty knife for me and probably others, I'm not interested in paying the upcharge for the midtech version.

Hmm Made in Taiwan is promising so very curious still not sold on the whole design myself but I think CRKT look to be making the right choice for where to make it.

Hi guys! CRKT picked up the Caswell Morphing Karambit as part of their 2019 catalog. We have them up on the site now if you would like to check out the specs or sign up to be notified when they arrive: https://www.gpknives.com/crkt-provoke-karambit-4040-caswell-black-kinematic-d2-steel.html

That's huge news. Thanks for sharing!

Looks like retail will probably be about $150? So about a quarter the cost of the Millit version. On the one hand, that's a little rough, because CRKT has been known to have spotty execution and isn't well known for good knives in this price point. But on the other hand, the materials are largely identical, and D2 isn't CPM 3V, but it's certainly not 1.4116, either.

Hopefully they step up quality control on these ones and aren't out of their depth.

CRKT™ - When you want to make sure it'll be flawed in some way!
Doesn't seem very helpful.

Any insight on the actual Rockwell? That page says 55-62. That's kind of a wide range. Interesting news, though.

Wasn't supposed to be :p:D , in all seriousness, I just think it's a shame that CRKT has so many unique and cool designs and then seems to fumble three feet from the touchdown. I said it before, they should consider getting back into a more premium sector, there are enough good China/Taiwan OEM's that could up the quality that CRKT puts out now, with a more premium steel, F&F and Materials. Their line up is big enough for them to pick 3-4 models, maybe pick 5 - 6 and let customers vote which 2-3 they want as high end models. That being said, I am talking about my perspective, where for example a Fulcrum 2 doesn't cost 60$ but 90$ with tax and everything, so they aren't exactly budget priced anymore due to tax.
Maybe a change to D2 and the new year means some optimism is warranted, guess we gotta wait and see.

CRKT seems to be trying to inhabit the space between budget and collector, but kind of failing at it. Some of their designs are top tier. I wish they'd just use better steel, fit and finish, and charge more...or make a Kershaw-->ZT style sister company.

I know we love to bag on CRKT but my Crossbones really is a nice knife and worth more than I paid for it

My favorite CRKT is the Swindle. The Homefront was done well too. Like I said, I love a lot of their designs, I just wish they'd come out with some higher end versions--even VG-10 or S30V.

But true....

And yeah, with that wide of an hrc range they might as well say "we don't know how to heat treat".

$150 for any crkt is too much given their track record. Good luck to those who buy one.

I liked the Swindle too but I passed my on a few months back. I really wish there was a more premium version in the price range of $100-200 that deserved that price range.
