This one is presently in transit from Nick to that scoundrel Danbo. Regrettably, it's not coming anywhere near me. :grumpy:

The specs are 11" blade of forged W2 (obviously clay heat treated), stainless single guard and killer ironwood handle.

I'll let Danbo add any further details - all I can say is I hope he's going through extreme torture waiting for this beauty to arrive. :p

Now that is a Danbo knife if I ever saw one :D. Trust me you won't want to be around when he tries to decide if he is going to use it or not. That puppy screams "use me". Congrats Dan. Fantastic looking job Nick!

ya know, I don't think I've met a Nick W knife I haven't liked! And in this case, Nick has finally demonstrated a real appreciation for the handle ergos... ya, that puppy screams "CHOP WITH ME!!!" Man, I love that handle!

Danbo... you dog... that looks even better than what you've been trying to describe to me - what was it? Sorta like a Green River skinner... only bigger??... just a hint of bolo without a recurve... major chopper there!

Thanks for posting this pic, Roger. I have to tell you, I couldn't be happier with this knife, if Heather Locklear were delivering it personally(Ok, maybe that WOULD be nicer). :)

This is actually part 1 of a two knife set that Nick is working on for me. The other one is near identical, except it will have a not so pronounced Hamon and African Blackwood handle. Oh, by the way, that top edge is very sharp too.

Man, that Nick Wheeler guy is good!!! :D

HAHAHAHAHA!!! just kidding of course! I only said that because of a discussion we were having on another forum about blowing your own horn.

Now the serious part:

This knife was inspired by a Jimmy Fikes' camp knife that Matt Lamey posted on Don Fogg's site about a year and a half ago or so. The blade shape is very similar to the one Jimmy made.

I was surprised to find it quite a bit more challenging to forge this shape and also to grind the clip. I actually had to clean the clip grind up with 180x EDM stones and then took it out to 2000x. I know the clip will cut, I have a nice little reminder on my left index finger! lol

I have liked W2 ever since I started working with it, but this knife made me love it. Although sanding a blade with Vanadium in it to 2000x kinda' sucks (okay, it sucks a ton when it's an 11" blade) the Vanadium makes it hold a whicked edge for a long time.

Dan provided the Ironwood here. It's very dark and looks much like tortoise shell in person.

A huge thank you to Mitch Lum for his professional photography (he actually captured the ellusive hamon). And another big thanks to Roger for posting this. :D

Thanks for looking folks!
Nick

Fantastic knife Nick!!!!!

I really don't think Danbo deserves such a fine piece, let alone another one damn near like it!!! :grumpy: ;) :D

Bring on those hamon's!!!!!!!!

Hey Nick,

Terrific piece....Captivating actually.

Congrats!

Russ

Pretty awesome knife I must say. That wood is really nice, it also reminds me of tortoise shell. As nice as the handle is, the blade steals the show IMO. Very nice.

Quality and purposeful. What a combo! :) The hamon takes it well beyond the good user into the realm of the safe queen. It works either way. Wow.

Good photo, Mitch. Nice and clear, with the important stuff on display.

Congrats to all involved!

Gorgeous work, Nick. I remember the Fikes camp knife, and when I saw that one, the first thing that crossed my mind is that it was similar to the Fikes.

Just for the record, here is the picture of the Fikes camp knife that inspired this big Wheeler masterpiece. I simply fell in love with the blade shape, and told Nick to run with it as far as handle was concerned. I don't recall how big the knife was originally supposed to be, but I believe it was Nick's idea to stretch it out into this steriod infested 11" bladed monster. :D

Superb piece, I love it.

I am intrigued by the raised profile on the top clip - is this driven functionally, or pure aesthetics - either way its really great, but I am always kean to learn more about the physics of knife design and shape - so if it is function driven can someone explain it.

Cheers,

Stephen
