Big or little?

Currently have a BATAC & a Assym Basic 5 & a Assault Shaker so..

Now I am torn between grabbing a FBM or say an AD.
Sucks, but right now - I can only choose 1 or the other.

I had considered the FFBM but concerned it would not do as well on the finer cutting

What I normally do is take a GB Wildlife Hatchet and the Basic 5 and that normally takes really good care of my needs but - I am wondering if I got the FBM and piggy backed the Shaker - that would take care of it..

What think Ye?

Or...Would a better compromise be to get an ASH1 - Assuming it would slice / chop better than the Basic and the BATAC????

Personally I think the AS is too small. Ditch that for a FBM and AD/GW combo and you're in!
The ASH1 is a great all 'rounder, I'm going to ditch mine though when my FSH comes in. It's too 'in the middle' for me. The LE ASH looks like a better option to be truthful.
You really need one of each. Game Warden, Active Duty, ASH LE, FSH, and a FBM. Then you're set :D

You have an excellent combo in the B5 and the GB, I wouldn't change it. The B5 is, IMO, the best of the Basics.

I've found that the AS is just too thick to be a good small knife.

Grab the thinnest AD you can find and run with it.

You will use it much, much more than any FBM.

Besides EDC, mine sees a lot of kitchen duty. Great for fine work.

Get the FBM down the road.

Thanks for the help.

Wetdog - I like that approach especially, your right about the Shaker.

What thickness in an AD should I be looking for to be the most efficient slicer/cutter?

Sure appreciate the help.

Mine is one of the older Custom Shop AD's and IIRC .15" thick. I still haven't located my calipers since the move so I can't double check. Most were satin, mine is DC. Got it back in '04.

The newer flat grind ADs that are .17 are also good.

Just remeber down the road the FBM will cost so much more later that you might never get one.

Theres a lot of GW's, AD's, MS, etc small edc's that will be easier to get in the future.

Once the FBM's are gone gone. Lord help ya find one reasonably.

sell the basic 5. you'll probably get more than ya got in it.

Buy a FBM sooner than later.

Spring is coming and they are gonna cost more.

and grab a gw @ BCS or an ad on exchange when you get a chance.

Then your done forever.

Never need another......at least til next pay check

Last year's SE's are good slicers.

rt014 and Tony G, thanks. Thought that was right.:)

No, you don't sell of a Basic5.:eek: That is one of the handiest knives Jerry ever came up with, and when is the last time you've seen one for sale? I've had the entire series and the B5 is the only one I kept.

I don't know, I've seen way more ads for BM's in all modes than AD's, especially the earlier ones. I think they (FBM's), will pretty much stay constant for a bit, there's a bunch of them out there.:D:D
