Over the last few years I have been getting back into carrying and using a smaller fixed blade knife. However the biggest problem that I have had with most of them is the lack of a comfortable handle. This brings me to W.A Surls knives and my Big Palmer. I first took notice of Allen’s work on Fiddleback Friday’s when he posted a Kodiak for sale. Although I didn’t purchase that Kodiak it really caught my eye for some reason and it got me to thinking that I needed to see more of Allen’s work. Eventually I noticed that Allen had his own sub forum so I started looking around to see if Allen had any more knives that I might like and I discovered that he had his own sales on Wednesdays. So as fate would have it on 01-08-16 two days after the Wednesday sale I was lurking around on Blade Forums and decided to check out Allen’s forum and there still for sale was the “Big Palmer with epic red magma over black liners with white pinstripe flat ground on 1/8" A2 SFT with thick contoured handle”. I was immediately drawn to this knife as the handle just popped out to me due to red and brown coloring and it had my favorite liner, pinstripe combination. Second, I really liked the blade design as it screams utility. So the deal was made and I purchased the knife. When I received the knife I was blown away by the beauty of the handle and how well it melted into my hand. Life then decided to make me a little busier than what I normally like and it wasn’t until recently that I finally got to start using my Big Palmer. I like to test most of my fixed bladed knives in the kitchen first because I believe that it will tell me a lot about the handle comfort, the edge geometry of the knife and how it will perform for some of my outdoor task. One night I decided to make a stir fry for dinner and I used the Big Palmer to slice and chop up some vegetables. I found out due the thick handle on this knife I could actually modify my pinch grip that I use for my larger knives and chop up some carrots with this little knife. It performed flawlessly slicing up my mushrooms, prepping the cauliflower and broccoli. Since then my Big Palmer has been one of my go to knives in the kitchen and make a great little steak knife. When I showed this knife to my wife, she commented on how pretty it was and how good it felt in the hand. I told her that she could use the Big Palmer but it was my knife. So I hope you all enjoyed my little review and the pictures to follow.

The Moray: I first noticed this knife on the Fiddleback Forge sneak peak thread that’s posted every week. When I saw this knife I knew I had to have it. To star things off here are the stats on this knife ”Moray with natural g10 (similar to jade, but not as transparent) over natural liners with blue pinstripe flat ground on 3/32” A2 SFT. OAL 10” with a 5 ½” blade and an upswept handle. I have only just started using this knife but so far I am loving this design and in talking with my wife, she really seems to like it as well. Eventually I will post more about the Moray when time allows. In the meantime if one comes up for sale I highly suggest you snatch one up. Thank you all for your time.
